Is Adobe Photoshop 3.0 a lot better than 2.0? When I get a digital rebel I get photoshop 2.0 for free. Should I just wait and get that or buy photoshop 3.0?

Thanks.
Alex

Get Elements 2 and learn on it a while before you decide if you need to upgrade to 3. Once you own 2 there is an upgrade rebate of $20.

Major differences are RAW file conversion and integrated photo organizer, along with the healing tool, shadow/highlights tool and a general re-work of the desktop. Unless you need these items right away, 2 will get you by at least through your initial learning phase.

I could be wrong....but....I'm guessing you will get Photoshop Elements 2.0 with your camera purchase. Not Photoshop 2.0 (or 3.0 for that matter).

I find it strange that you would get such an old copy of Photoshop with any purchase.

Also, be aware that you must have Photoshop 4.0 or above to get any of the 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, CS upggrades. I don't think Photoshop 2.0 or 3.0 qualifies for the current upgrades.

Again....I could be wrong.....

We are definatley talking about "Elements" here.. not full Photoshop.

You're both right. My mistake.

I am new to all this Adobe photoshop stuff and thought that Adobe photoshop elements was all one thing. Thanks for correcting me!! By the way what is the difference?

Anyway, would you go with elements 2.0 for free or buy 3.0?

Thanks.

Can't go wrong this way. To me the upgrade really depends on whether you plan to shoot RAW or not and you don't necessarily know that yet.

Amazon was running a deal where PSE 3 was $45 with rebates so the RAW converter and Organizer were easily worth the cost. Now it is $65 with the rebates so still probably worth the cost but you might see more specials closer to Xmas. PSE 2 is enough to get you started and 3 is really not all that different except as I described.

When are you getting the camera?

I am either going to get the rebel around Chritstmas if the price goes down a lot or wait until I go on to Yelloewstone in June.

Thanks again.

If you are going to Yellowstone be sure to take along a telephoto. The Sigma 50-500 is affordable.

Wow. I used Photoshop 2 in 1993, almost 11 years ago.

We are up to 8.0 (CS) now in 2004.

You cannot get the rebate for buying Photoshop Elements 3.0 if you have an OEM version of 2.0. It says directly on the box that you must be an owner of a retail version of a previous version. OEM does not count.

OEM is official equipment manufacturers that gives you programs as CD only - no box or manuals or even tech support. It's a way of giving old or soon to be old programs out so that people will buy the newer or newest version of the software.

All you need for the rebate is a valid serial # for a previous version. The disk that came with the Digital Rebel has a valid serial number - my guess is that it will with the 20D as well. It is a full licensed version and eligible for upgrades. The retail box and manual are not required for the rebate.

I always shoot in raw with my digital rebel which came with elements 2...new at this, I don't understand what would be the difference using elements 3 (I haven't even used 2 yet but will this week).

PSE 3 includes tools that can be used to edit exposure and other attributes in the RAW file itself before converting the RAW files to other formats. It is more functional, easier to use and faster than the Canon File Viewer Utility that you must currently be using.
