I got the tripod ring for the 70-200 F4L and it doesn't fit with my Grip on my 10D.
My quick release plate hits the grip and won't close at all.
I am using a Bogen 488RC2 head on my tripod.

Is there anybody with a similiar setup? Have you got it to work somehow?

I really like my grip and my tripod head, so I would hate to have to not use one of them.

Thanks

I don't know about getting this to work but you don't really need the collar for the 4.0L lens, since it's not that heavy compared to the 10D. It is good to be able to rotate the camera without using the ball head and dropping the ball down in the slot to go vertical. At least not using the collar would let you use the ball head. I have the 488RC4 head with my Manfrotto 3221WN tripod.

I got it to work by putting the camera on the tripod backwards, works fine, just the quick release latch is at the front. No big deal.

There are a number of "RC2" heads that have this problem. I had it with the newer "grip" head.

Whats funny is some of the manfrotto heads mount the RC2 to the side.. instead of front to back. Near as I can tell this ALLWAYS works.. and it is really conveinient.. I can't figure why they don't just have all of them mounted with the latch to the side.

What am I missing? Why can't you just mount the plate so that the release is off to one side?

That's how I do it. Works fine.

Depends on the head.. but with the "grip head" you can't.
With a ball head .. a standard ball head.. of course you are correct.. it makes no difference at all.. you can have the plate oriented whcihever way you want.
