Hey folks I am just now venturing into the world of night time motocross photography. I started a couple of years ago when my son took up motocross racing. I have improved dramatically over the last couple of years, but I have never really attacked the whole night time thing. I recently got out on the track and tried my internal flash, and had some sucsess, but never consistent; and I always had to get with-in 20 ft or less. Not to mention the slow reload time. I know there is a huge range of price from Bower and Sun Pak to Canon.
I don't really want to spend a ton of money on a flash, but I don't want a flash that won't meet the needs of sports type photography. Thanks for any help.

Are you shooting at night? Podium Productions at Milestone Park?

I've shot there at night with my Canon 430EX and it worked great. It's way too dark to shoot with the f2.8 & high iso alone.

BTW the pop up flash on my 40D has only been up when I accidentally press the button. It doesn't really work that great.

Get yourself on the track,,,,anything more than about ten or 15 feet away is tough, no matter the flash. I usually get right on top of the corner and shoot down at them,,,or right next to the lip of a jump, or better yet, stand right in the middle of a table when you can. I am sure you know where it safe to be or not if your son races..If you click on my name and see some of my postsit may help, I have done a ton of stuff at night,,usually at StarWest..;)

Be sure to clear it with track officials before you try and go on of course.
