I searched the forum first for info and I'm almost scared to ask for fear that people with a bitter taste still in their mouth from the older version of this lens will feel the need to vent again.

I have a 10D and need a lens for taking regular ol' family type pictures in and outdoors of people, stuff and and landscapes. I have a Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 that I use for my son's diving and gymnastics and I'm pleased with it. This is why I'm considering another Sigma lens. It will be used as an all purpose lens so I don't think fixed focal lenght is an option but then, I'm a newbie. If you have an opinion on this lens I like to read it. If you have a sugestion of another lens ($350-$550) that you feel would be a good one to consider I'd like to see those also.

Thanks for your time,

Rob

I think this is simply a re-badge of there older 17-35mm? (they added the letters "DG" to it.. and in fact when introduced it was not even an "EX".. they upped it to "EX" status about a year ago .. again without any real changes to my knowledge.

If this is the case.. the older one was just about the softest noisiest and slowest focusing 17mm zoom out there. I did not like that lens at all.

A new lense to consider might be the sigma 18-50 2.8, its only drawback is it can only be used on APS-C sensor cameras.

The original Sigma 17-35mm did not get good reviews and I believe CDS is right about the new version not being much different. Some good alternatives with similar focal lengths would be:

Tamron 17-35 f/2.8-4:A good alternative if speed and reasonable cost is important
Canon 17-40 f/4: A bit more money, but great build and quality, always a recommended lens
Sigma 15-30 f/3.5-4.5: A good alternative if you are most interested in the wide side.
Canon 16-35 f/2.8: Highly recommended if money is no object

All of the above lenses are considered to be sharp for their focal lengths. You should be able to find many threads debating which is sharpest, with no clear winner. In other words, they're all good.

Shameless Plug: I have a Sigma 15-30mm for sale in the marketplace forum. It is in perfect condition and is listed at $385. :D
