I caught these tourist jet skiing today at work. I thought I would try my hand at some panning shots. Please let me having it, I am learning. I did notice my lens was grubby, sorry about that.

Doesn't look like you had your ISO fast enough? Very blurry....but looks like fun;)

Do you think the subjects are blurry? I was trying to get the subjects focused and the background blurry. I was trying to achieve a race car effect with the jet ski. I guess I didn't get it right. :(

I did a crop, so it doesn't look so busy. Is this any better? The subjects look focused to me, but my eyes are not the greatest.

Check that out. That would be sharp. But yours definately make those jetski's look fast.

I see it now, when compared to yours. Mine is not sharp. I also see you had faster shutter speed 1/1000, mine 1/50. Do I need to bump up shutter speed? or just practice panning better? I was using a monopod with a panning ball head, but I notice I have a hard time keeping even with the action. I going to try again if we have more people riding this week. All advice welcome. Thank you for the help.

For panning I would start around 1/200 and chimp and adjust as needed. Panning shots vary for ss, I have used as high as 1/400 for Indy cars and for nascar around 1/250. Just practice and have fun with it, shoot lots of shots.

Thank you I will bumping up the shutter speed and try again. I know what you mean by lots of shots. I took about fifty this day and these were the top two. It is fun especially listening to the 40D 6fps firing away. I love this camera. Thank you for the advice. Time to go out and play again.

One thing I forgot to mention is to continue to track subject for a half second after shot is taken for good results. I have good luck if Im leaning against a pole or some object with a wide stance to make me steady.

Thank you again, Chuck. I will keep this in mind and make sure I keep tracking even after I have taken the shot. I have a monopod and used it on these shots. Hopefully, when I bump up the shutter speed I will get rid of the softness, if not I will break out the tripod. Thanks again for the advice.
