About two years ago, I messed around in the electronic music scene. I actually bought tables, a mixer, etc. I spun one party too. But, then I realized that I just didn't have the energy to be staying up til 7AM after every party I went to.

But, I still really enjoy the music. As a matter of fact, as of late, I haven't listened to really anything other than electronic (mainly a big fan of trance, but do enjoy drum 'n' bass and progressive house).

Anyone else enjoy electronic music?

I listen to a bit of it - but then again I listen to a bit of everything from classical to heavy metal. No country or rap though. But everything else is fair game.

Now I don't know if you call it electronic or trance or techno or whatever, but I've been getting into The Orb's stuff and Paul Oakenfeld's "Voyage Into Trance." The Orb's "Toxygene" get's me going something fierce - it's one of my favorite road songs, and I have a tendency to play this with the volume at 11 - especially at 4:00 AM when I'm just heading out. I burned a CD full of it, 17 times or something, because I got sick of hitting the replay button on the CD player. :D

Checking my songs at home, I see I've got some Chemical Brothers that I like, Dub Foundation, DJ Spooky's stuff is great, and some Tosca. Another of my old favorites was The Art Of Noise.

If you have any suggestions throw them over - I listen to such a variety of stuff that I never learn the names of things, and I might hear something once, love it, and never hear it again. :-(

Electronic is probably one of my favorite genres. I listen to everything from Rap to Rock to Classical, but as of late ive been pretty Rap/Electronic oriented. I've really been getting into Trance as of late...can't get enough of it. Dj Tiesto, John Digweed, Paul Oakenfield, Sasha, and The Crystal Method are probably my favorite dj's, along with most any trance right now.

Scottes - Look for John Digweed - Heaven Scent...One of my favorites.

also from the movie Blade, the song playing in the club at the very beginning...i have it as Blade - Vampire dance club, i dont know the real name, but its good too.

I have some good Oakenfield songs but the titles are escaping me right now, I'll get back to you if your still interested.

Trying to get that Toxygene right now...cant seem to find it..

Edit :

Almost forgot, if you want a different style of electronic, more uh...P.O.'d, i'll say, try VNV Nation and Covenant. German electronic artists, they put out some good stuff, look for Electronaut.

At the risk of really dating myself, what is an electronic music? Is that like music played on electric instruments vs acoustic instruments? Or are we talking synthesized music vs real instrument music? ??? ???

Leo I'll play you some at the next GCPS.

:D

Classifying "electronic" would be like classifying "rock." Maybe worse. Describing it is just as tough.

But it does have a tendency to be more with electronics instruments, and often enough with only electronic instruments. Often fast paced, though "trance" and some others can be mellow. "Ethereal" might be one way to describe trance, at least sometimes. Much of it has a tendency to a strong bass line, and... Oh, I give up.

Have you ever watched one of the "teen" shows on TV and they go to a club and they have that loud fast-paced music playing? That's one form of electronic. "Club" or "Drum & Bass" most likely.

Have you ever seen the movie Mortal Combat? The them song was a form. Or Men In Black? Though they're both a more pop style of electronic, but it might give you an idea of what it leans towards.

I give up again.

I've got at least a few songs by all of them, and I do like the dub when I'm in the mood. Oakenfeld's "Voyage to a Trance" is just great - I can listen to that any time. Damn near anything by The Orb.

Now you've got me clicking through some of my songs...

It really can be summarized into one statement. Electronic music is music made almost entirely with computers (be it through programs, drum machines, synthesizers, keyboards, DSP's, and the list goes on).

Speeds for electronic music (all in Beats Per Minute or BPM). And, I know this may not make a lot of sense, but this is what I've gathered over the past couple of years.

Deep House: 120 - 128
Progressive House: 126 - 132
Breakbeats: 130 - 137

Hard Trance: 137 - 142
NRG: 137 - 145
Drum 'n' Bass: 145 - 165

Walter (Wendy) Carlos

Wendy Carlos could be a bit weird at times, but other times she was simply incredible. Her work on the Clockwork Orange soundtrack is awe-inspiring.

I *love* classical music redone like this. Emerson, Lake, and Palmer are my favorite band. Their "remakes" of classic tunes, and all their classical-inspired music is superb, IMHO. Moody Blues & Yes are also way up there in my book.

I have to admit a major love for this psychedelic music. Pink Floyd and Nektar pretty much round the list that I know. Can anyone suggest any others?

I really wish that I knew classical music better. I've got a nice collection, 30 or 40 CDs, but I'm always worried that I'm missing some great piece. I should watch all those Bugs Bunny cartoons again to find what I'm missing. Heh. Not a bad way to spend a rainy day, Bugs & Classical.

Apart from it being my job, I love electronic music.

Old stuff I like: Kraftwerk, TD, Wendy Carlos and all the classic 80s electropop like Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Heaven 17, The Human League, Soft Cell, OMD, Thomas Dolby, Telex etc.

New: I like a lot of glitch and IDM, stuff like Soft Pink Truth, DAT Politics, Hrvatski, Venetian Snares, Kid 606, ****mat, Chris Clark, Tigrics and more melodic acts like Ulrich Schnauss, Boards of Canada, M83..

Hmmm... better stop there, I guess! :)

Damn, I must be old, because I like everything on your "Old Stuff" list, and have heard of nothing on the new list.

"Yazoo" is a band I haven't heard in a while. Alas, that's just because I haven't played the CD in many, many years.... I'm totally depressed now.

Damn, I must be ancient because I haven't even heard of any of the groups (artists?) in the "Old Stuff" list!

Anybody into the "Femur Bones and Rib Cage Rock Age Band"? ???

Well, I'm 38 so I'm no spring chicken! :D

I loved both the Yazoo albums. The first was sooo spongy and springy, classic Vince Clarke electrodoodling. The second one was a lot sadder and flutey and you could tell him and Alison Moyet were drifting apart...

If you like Yazoo, you should definitely have a listen to Boards of Canada. Haunting music, the same kind of folky melodies that Kraftwerk loved. They remind me of Satie and Debussy quite a lot.

I'm with you Leo, I thought Yazoo was a search engine. Since were on the topic of music, anybody know why in the H... Pink Floyd has not released the Pulse concert on DVD. Believe it or not my only copy that I have and still listen to is on Laser Disc. All I have to do is stick a matchbook under the disc and I'm set to go.

I am a big fan of Jean Michel Jarre.Jarre is one of the greatest electronic artists of all time............

In terms of other electronic related stuff , I have always liked:
Sash
The Crystal Method
Prodigy
Warp Brothers
Aquagen
Oakenfold
DJ Hooligan/Da Hool(too bad he isn't as big here as he is overseas)

I could keep going all day.

Not a huge fan of D&B but Aphex Twin has some good music like their Violin Solo and Window Licker.

I listen to pretty much everything from rap to foreign to country. Well not very much of country heh.

yea, I listen to it sometimes, mainly when I'm out at clubs. I know a few DJs as well, and some of these guys really are artists. Spinning live for a couple hours and making it sound good isn't exactly easy... I think (never tried it)

i worked as a photographer in the electronic music industry for a good 4 years traveling from nyc to b-more all the time to shoot... had tons of fun, met lots of people (this is ontop of me being a club kid / raver since about 95) and don't wish i did anything differantly - but the scene has changed so much now that its not really enjoyable anymore.

i did manage to piss off my fair share of people though when cutting 500+ (in some cases several thousand) people in line as i was granted vip access to most everywhere i went, hehe... also got published in URB, mixer, lotus, bpm, vice and a few other mags

Electronica to me is slow RAVE music using electronic instruments.
I highly reccommend the "Chillout" series from Nettwerk records for slower. Make sure it is by Nettwerk (there are several copycats out there)

A lot of electronica, techno, rave, gothic, industrial and similiar music all tends to get intermixed in the alternative category or dance in major record stores.

amoung the groups I listen to (all count in some way in the electronica category)
Delerium
Amethystium
Orbital
Orb
Dead Can Dance (a touch more Gothic then electronic)
Balligomingo
Juno Reactor
Renegade Soundwave
The Shamen
Utah Saints
Leftfield
The Art of Noise
The Prodigy (a bit too industrial though)
Collide (way more gothic)
Wench (also a bit gothic)
Electric Skychurch
the first two songs on Traci Lords 1000 fire album
A lot of Sarah MacLachlan remixes
And about 50 others I can't remember right now

and of course Kraftwerk
and the original electronica song is "popcorn", for which I always forget the name of the group.

For the person that likes the Blade disco scene music, that is one of 3-4 good songs on the soundtrack album, the rest are rap and crap on top of it. So if you have just that song you have the best of the album.

I tend to like this kind of music when shooting models as it tends to help them pose a bit better.

That rings a bell, but was it called "Popcorn" ? Or something similar?

And wasn't the artists "M" ?

I think....

Curos, if you like that blade song, try to get

Warp Brothers vs Aquagen - Phat Bass (Blade Remix)
also try
Warp Brothers - We will Survive

both are a few years old, but are among my favorites

BTW proper spelling is Oakenfold, I went to one of his events at a local club, that man blew the roof off the building.

Hot Butter was the name of the group that recorded the version I am familiar with.

The song was first released in 1969 as part of a Kingsley solo album called "Music To Moog By." MOOGBY Then the First Moog Quartet, while on their nation-wide tour of college and universities, used "Popcorn" as their encore song. In 1972, "Popcorn" was recorded by a group of musicians under the band name Hot Butter. Stan Free, who was a member of the First Moog Quartet, played the Moog on this recording. More information on the recording is

a link to more information
http://www.kingsleysound.com/Popcorn.html

Although technically Kraftwerk existed before Popcorn was written, Popcorn hit the charts 2 years (1972) before Kraftwerk was noticed (autobahn - 1974). Also Popcorn was released a year (1969) before the first "Kraftwerk" recording (1970) was released.
So I always give credit to Popcorn as the first electronica song and Kraftwerk for being the first popular electronica group and significant influence on others.

Now back to photography, since Popcorn is not good for the models as they tend to get giggly when ever it comes on.

I have been listening to electronic music for about 10 years - I currently love Acid Techno, but have been through phases where I loved Psy trance (eg hallucinogen) and don't mind a bit of DnB as well. My husband and I met at a rave, and lucky for me he buys heaps of records. I too am fed up with going out, but I still love the music, I always will. I really don't like some of the new stuff out at the moment eg New Energy, but thats a sign of me getting old.

I used to be heavily interested in Electronica. Have gigs upon gigs of music. Lately, I've been getting reaaaly bored of the stuff. Seems all too repetitive to me. Not much originality.

However, there's still some stuff I listen to. Ferry Corsten, Johan Gielen, Armen van Buuren are among my favorites.

Sweet man, thanks. Those are good songs, need to listen to em more...

i.e. the concert, I would kill to see him in concert. When I was in Florida last summer, Crystal Method was playing at House of Blues the night I was leaving :( I was so bummed. I need to find one coming to Dallas soon.
