Not sure what sort of fly this is. I found a whole heap of them gathered on a rotting log when we went for a drive in the country. The spots that look white are actually metallic silver. I thought they looked pretty spectacular but the wife was more interested in the view of the countryside - obviously she has no eye for beauty ;)

Interesting... the larvae are carnivorous and the adults are vegos.

Dan - nice shot. Looks similar to one I got shots of recently, suspect it's Amenia imperialis (member of the Calliphoridae family).
pekpek - it's a drone fly. I also took some recent shots of this beauty.

Nice photo! VERY Interesting fly, we have nothing like that in the states....
