Gang--- how come I see a lot of photogs with this mohawkish geek/Alfalfa hair thing going on? David Jay has the hair style--- I just read an article in Strobist and the photog had the same thing.....
Is this the style? My style left in the late 80's so I need to try to understand the trends. In reality this hair trend reminds me of the martin short Saturday Night Live skit.
Help and maybe some fashion advice is appreciated.

I think he's talking about the 'do where the hair is gelled up into a spikey ridge that looks semi-mohawkish but without actually shaving the sides.

I agree with the OP. It's like there's a bunch of 20-something Rodesian Ridgebacks running around.

Hmmm… Didn’t the spiky hair die with punk? Seems all I see these days is big baggy pants hanging around mid-thigh level or lower with the undies in clear view. I guess I’m getting old. Spiky hair is could somewhat understand but wandering around with your pants around your ankles I just don’t get. I mean I know that guys do stupid stuff to get laid and I also know that at some time your pants have to come off, but come-on, what ever happened to flirting and the chase. ;)

They can't run, they can barely step over a speed bump:confused:

Guys look much worse with baggy pants (and even worse in tight girl pants) I just don't think that they realize it. They look much nicer in a pair of jeans that fit well.

The hairstyle is called a faux hawk and it looks ok on some guys, some being the key word. :)

I agree.. Maybe we need to start the faux hawk and baggy pants picture thread. ;) Post your best worst faux hawk or baggy pants pic.

Did you know in Louisana a law has been passed making it illegal to wear those pants in public? It has gotten that bad!!!

Sorry gang--- I have been sick. YES that is the hair. What is with it? Sometimes the top point is much taller. Can someone explain what this is called or who the heck started this Alfalfa trend?

I work with a guy who does a double comb over. It makes sort of a crisscross pattern.

I don't like comb overs but understand why men who are balding try to do such----- This new creative photog hair style has to have some reason-- and source.
Wazza what made you start doing this? I am guessing you have also noticed other photogs with this style?
If I start doing this to my hair will it make me a better photographer? I need all of the help I can get. :)

Eeeeeeugh.
When he leans forward does it flap open like a bin lid?

LOL…. No, but when freshly combed the pattern is striking and one cant help but stare. When at meetings I actually like to observe others as their eyes just migrate up there and lock on like a deer and headlights. :)

I also worked with someone who did the double comb-over. His trick actually made it believable if you didn't study him for too long.

First off, he had curly/wavy hair. This helps with the texture and fullness illusion.

The first comb-over was done from the BACK of the head towards the front. Yes, this is the same as a bald mullet. The hair is just long enough to cover without going too far.

The second comb-over is the standard side-to-side. The giveaway is that he parts his hair lower than most men.

The side-to-side comb-over goes over the back-to-front hair. The criss-cross pattern is broken up by the curly hair. The curly hair pushes the side-to-side higher. It worked fairly well.

I try to avoid giving comments on balding men. I have no frame of reference. My mother's father had a full head of hair when he died at 78. I'm 44 and have a full head of thick hair. My hairline is where it was when I was 10. I'm a happy guy, but I don't flaunt it and I avoid putting down men who are going through a tough time in their life.

Then again, ugly comb-overs should be identified by family members and a new hair approach should be sought.

Interesting. I found this doing the search on faux hawk......not sure it would look good on me. I am not sure a 40 yo guy should wear this.....maybe I could act 20ish if I wore it.....prob not. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fauxhawk

Hmmm - will this style be in for women photographers? I just had my hair cut with a number 6. Very short, yes. But this is the price to be paid for a bad dye job. I love scaring stylists with this too. It's fun to see their expressions when I tell them to get out the clippers. LOL.

My hair is rather short as well (see avatar), but I think that I have finally decided that I am going to attempt to grow it out, this weird in-between stage is the hardest part.

Yup - that's exactly why mine stays short. I HATE the growing out stage!! It sucks. There is no way to make my hair look good at that stage. And, to be honest, going back to long hair after having it short is very difficult. Short is just so damn easy and convenient. Sometimes I miss having it long, but I just can't seem to get past that in-between PITA stage.

Hey, has nothing to do with my photography. Just how I sometimes have it cut/styled when it's a bit shorter!
One day a couple of years back the hairdressed asked if I wanted a semi mohawk - working in an office I was a little jubious.

My family gene is to go bald. I may as well style the hair up/criss cross or afro before I have to make do with shiny head syndrome. :D

It really is called a faux hawk. I have no idea who started it though. :)

Before this thread, I never knew that style had a name.

It was my best example, front on, of the style.

Bit more recent, late 2007

PS. I keep thinking I've got a chubby face at times, and having hair upwards, elongates my face.

PPS. Kinda realised my current avatar of the past 6 months is similar again

y'all haven't brought up the biggest hair sin.. Yes, come overs are goofy as are mohawks faux hawks etc... But, nothing beats the mullet. Nada.. there is nothing to compare it to. I sometimes wonder if people realizing what it is they're wearing when they sit down in the chair and say 'business in front, party in the back'.. and the hairdressers willing to style hair into a mullet need a reality check.

As for the ladies talking over short hair i've recently cut off the better part of a foot of hair I can't believe that it took me as long as it did to get rid of the braid down my back. Oh the liberation!!!

Also styles are way different between countries. Skinheads much more common in UK, whereas NZ, most have gelled spiky hair - the younger ones anyway ;)

I know, mine has been short for about 7 years now, and it will still be somewhat short. I am think a dramatic A-line type cut would work for me, we'll have to see how long I last, it is still very similar to my avatar, so I haven't gotten to the really weird stage yet.

I love it when they fall flat on their face because the baggy pants tripped them up...Have seen it twice..and man did they hit hard to..one fell into the car next to him trying to get out of his own car face first...I alomost cant walk from laughing so hard..:):D:lol:
