70-200 2.8

I just got a used 70-200 2.8 On the side there is a button that says 1.5m and then it can be switched to 3m. What are these for?

This switch controls the minimum focusing distance. Normally, I keep mine on 3m unless shooting something up close. This reduces the search time when its trying to focus.
