Hi, just found the site and new to digi cams. I've had my A40 for a couple of months. I read somewhere on the web that this camera could be used as a webcam . I checked the manual but no luck. Any ideas?.......ryuhei

Unfortunately, it can't be used as a webcam. :(

I think that is a load of bull. The camera shoots movies to memory so why not directly to my usb? Someone will make a hack sometime in the near future. If there isn't one already. The camera definitely has flash memory so it's only a matter of time. Hey!...Hasn't this been done with other digital cameras?? :-)

Great.
In that case please tell us how it is done as I am sure there are a lot of other A40 users out there (myself included) who would like to be able to do this seeing that according to you, it is possible.

I am unsure if any Canon model performs this function...I too would like to achieve it, but have decided to purchase Canon regardless as they seem to be superior in many other aspects.
I would love to hear of any legitimate (or hack) method of linking it as a web cam.

You could of course use the video out into a video in card on your PC which can then be used as a webcam but with webcams costing as little as £20, it's probably cheaper to buy a dedicated one.

This would be technically possible, since they have enable remote capture through the USB connection. However, you would have to have some other program that could broadcast the live video stream, since the supplied program will only capture stills.
Also, there is a difference between streaming and preview mode, for a digital camera, and I'd be surprised if Canon went to the trouble to implement a streaming driver, if they weren't going to offer it as a feature.
You could try any generic A/V application, such as Netmeeting, and if the camera appears in their list of available capture devices, you should be good to go. If not, you're probably out of luck.

For those waiting, Canon already posted their official answer - by the way is very disappointing. You can read it the following URL, in summary can not use it for webcam (unless some creative mind enables it !!!).
