I offered this to the paper myself, but I have no idea how much to charge.
There is a concert of Polish band in Toronto this weekend and Polish weekly might be interested in putting some pics in the next issue. How much to charge?
Also - in situation like this - is it enough to get a perwmission to take pics form the band or do I need to specify that I want to sell them? In writing or verbal is enough?
Thanx

You might get a better response by posting this question on the "Cornering the Pros" board on this forum.

Generally the performance of a band is copywritten. But these guys ain't the Rolling Stones so I doubt if they would have any objection to free publicity. Still it would be nice to ask first.
With a paper or really anything along these lines I'd ask them what their normal rates were for purchasing a photograph. That way you won't ask for $50 when they'll happily pay $100. You'll feel pretty stupid if you leave money on the table, and I've been there! After they tell you their rate then you can decide if that's enough or if you want to counter bid as in "How about $125?"
Now this Polish paper might be planning on staffing the concert themselves so you might want to ask first so you don't waste a lot of effort. They might also be complete jerks and staff it AFTER you give them a heads up that it's on. You pays your money and takes your chances I suppose.

Be sure to get a generic model release (http://members.aol.com/kevinoneil/model.html)signed by all individual band members. This will give you permission from them to sell/distribute the photos as you see fit. Without a model release you do not stand a chance in court if they decided to sue you for using photos of them without their permission.

That's probably true and they probably will refuse to sign it just because it could ruin any merchandising deals they might want to make (Polish T-shirts?). But that kind of permission isn't needed if it's only for editorial use.

Thanx all of you. So - DaveG, if it's for the paper use only, I do not need to worry about model release, correct?

At a large venue a band will come into town and a newspaper will approach the band though the venue's PR department. The band will give the media permission to shoot. We were almost always given permission to shoot the first three songs but the wheel would get re-invented somehow for each performer. Bryan Adams let us shoot songs three, four, and five while we stood around in the pit waiting through the first two. Perhaps he wanted to be suitably sweaty ... Three songs in the film days was three rolls of film so it was more than enough, although the motordrive came in handy!
If you are shooting on private property like in a club, you will need permission to be there and you should get that permission very early and hopefully with the help of the newspaper. Then you are acredited. But I've shot over a hundred concerts (with permission) for a daily newspaper in Canada without EVER getting a model release.
The only potential problem would be if you take your best shot, put on the front of a few hundred t-shirts, and then try to sell them. Try NOT to do that!
