What kind of insurance do you guys use for your gear. Is it covered in both home and automobiles? I am at the point that I have too much to loose if someone grabbed my Camera Bag or broke into my in home studio.

I called my insurance company and specified my camera gear (about US$1800 at the moment) under my contents policy. It didn't even cost me any more. I'm going to have to increase that amount soon, too. I have cover anywhere inside my country, with full replacement with new items.

I've spent alot of time as of late redoing my insurance plan. I put a special rider against my home policy that covers me for just about everything with my gear. All for replacement value. If I drop it in the lake it's covered even if it's my fault. I'm covered whether it is stolen from my car, home, or even a hotel in some obscure corner of the world.

I had a little bit of surprise last month when they called me and said that my rider had exceeded the limits. Apparently the special rider can only be to a max of 30%ish of the household policy. I ended up paying a little bit more but it is well worth the piece of mind.

Is that an attached coverage to your regular homeowners insurance? That will cover you for theft, subject to your homeowner's deductible (in the U.S.).

Another option is a "Personal Articles" policy - a stand-alone policy that covers your equipment if it's stolen, lost or accidentally damaged (at least that's what mine, through State Farm, covers). No deductibles. The annual premium is $1.65 (USD) per $1000 of coverage.

These coverages almost certainly vary widely depending upon where you reside.

I'm in New Zealand, I suspect insurance is quite different here from there. I don't own a house, so I don't have a homeowners policy - just a policy that insures the contents - ie my stuff. The policy I chose covers any of my stuff anywhere in the country, and maybe in other countries too. Once I get a bit more gear i'll make sure i'm covered for any dumb accidents I have, but I think i'm covered for that already.
