Hi guys/gals,
I am taking my son to the local fair and wanted suggestions on which lens(s) I should carry with me to get great pictures. I will be there in the evening (during light) and then into the night. The equipment I have is listed in my signature.

We just went to the carnival and I only took a 24-70. I wish I took something wider and something with more reach.

If only one lens. I'd take the 17-40L. Reasonably wide, yet also reasonably fast. I'd think the wide would come in handy more often than the reach of a longer lens.

What do you want to take pictures of?

How close do you think you will be to your subject(s)?

A little more information on what you want to do will help. -

The 17-40/4 for twilight and 50/1.4 for night. I use my 17-55/2.8 IS for the same purpose and it does fine.

50 f1.4, zoom with your feet, get the candid shot without alerting your subjects with a distracting flash, set the camera on a fence rail and get the ride lights swirling ;)

Point and Shoot! Surely you want to have fun too - get wet and dirty, eat icecreams, donuts, candyfloss, get thrown about on fairground rides etc etc...instead of nursing your gear - surely ??

Leave it at home this once perhaps and enjoy the day/night with your son. ;)
