Can anyone recommend where to get some good/cheap priced backdrops? I have a stand already. Paper is too hard to deal with. Material stores don't have good sizes and aren't that cheap overall. I think I would like black, purple, orange and gold. Open for other ideas as well. Right now I only have black paper. Yes, I'm new to this :) I hear mixed reviews on Amvona on ebay. What do you think? Thanks

Adorama has some cheap muslin ones that look like a decent deal. Also I have seen a few resellers through amazon (not amazon directly) show some good deals.

I got a couple muslins from Amvona. While their muslins aren't as thick as canvas, for the price I couldn't be happier. For 10'x24' I paid around $40 and for 10'x20' I paid around $50 with s&h included. To get a muslin that dimension at a local fabric store, I'd have to pay well over $200 a piece unpainted!

I checked adorama...ehhhh...I think I'll pass on them. Sys and total thanks for the info. I actually remembered your post sys about the backdrops but couldn't find it. I'm just not sure which one on ebay to get. The black one looks like silk in the picture! I don't want that. Total...that one looks awesome..how much did that cost you? I also hear that a grey muslin backdrop can be changed to almost any color with some gels. Anyone have experience with that?

wow...I see why people say muslins are expensive! Thanks for the info though....I found those on their website. Very nice! I'm not ready to spend $92 on a background when all I'm doing is test shooting and TFP/CD for family and girls that want to model. I hear that you can shoot with colored gels to the backdrop and they will color them? I hear it works well on a gray backdrop? The seattle gray does look nice...but is $64 a good deal for it?

Try buying any seamless material 10x16, see how much you will pay. I think that is cheap, real cheap! I just looked at the cost of making my own and it would have been double at least.
I do not know anout the gels.
Just my thoughts.... $100 background, to make nicer test shots, portfolio, if you are going to get one eventually, you might as well do some GREAT test shots, and have it in hand for when you really need it? Just my 2 cents

I helped my dad make one for his makeshift studio downstairs. He just used a cheap white king sized topsheet and dyed it himself. It works great and was a total of like $30...
