I'm kinda new to this so........
Can anyone recommend a good starter lens for the 10D. I'm looking for a general snapshot/walk around lens similar to the 18-55 kit lens for the 20D.
I'd like it to have a decent wide angle, and about a 3 to 5X zoom.
Any recommendations? Anything in the $200 range that might work?
Thanks,
TMR

Hi TMR812,
welcome to the forum!
I think that's a tricky one ... there are some 18-50 and 18-125 lenses from Sigma that work on EF (not just EF-S), but I don't know about the quality.
Maybe take a look at this thread, the Tamron 24-200 does look interesting.

Welcome. I'm new here too.
You should know that in general, the larger the range the lens can cover the worse the quality will be. It's not a hard and fast rule, but it applies generally. If you get something like a 28-75 or 28-135 that would be a great lens to start with. Once you know what you want you can get better quality lenses.

Well I had a Sigma 18-125 and it was fairly decent. At full wide it had some obivous vignetting problems and at full telphoto it was somewhat soft. I guess it was pretty good for a $250 lens.
I just recently sold it and have a Tamron 28-75 2.8 on order, hopefully it will be a little better performer.

The Ef 28-105 is in your $ 200 price range at B& H
I have the Ef 24-85 that he thinks is a bit flimsy. Not my experience however. Very Sharp at F8 and F11. More like $ 300 however.

Sigma 18-50 f/3.5-5.6 DC
(DC means it is specifically designed for 1.6 crop factor - this lens doesn't work on a film SLR). It's a bit slow but it is sharp even wide open.
The price is less than 200$ - I think this is almost identical to the 300D/20D kit lense.
If you want wider aperture, they have a new model, of course much more expensive:
Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 DC EX
