Seems so doesn't it. I see more and more posting on the EOS dSLR forum than here.

Well, I *post* on the DSLR forum.
Cheaper than actually *buying* a DSLR
No kidding, but maybe the Pro1/G6 people just aren't as enthusiastic as the G2&G3 crowd....
Best regards,
Andy

I hope that the posting continues for the G-series - I didn't find this site that long ago - and I wish that I would have sooner. One of the better and more friendly forums on the net related to photography.
Besides - I think that there is much still to learn about the proper use of my G5 and I need everyone's help with that endevour. I would also assume that the G6 is selling like hotcakes - we should have many potential new posters each and every day.

Funny enough, just earlier today I absolutely reached my limit with forums, mainly because they tend to be pretty repetitive, and partly because they are particularly susceptible to misinformation and unsubstantiated opinion. Mistakes will happen (and I should know!) but good advice can only be the fruit of experience.
But, on the other side of the coin, as bauerman has quite rightly pointed out, forums like Photography On the Net can be useful if you find a few on a thread who actually have a good number of years behind them and can back up their wise words with interesting, well-taken images.
So maybe most of the G-series owners are out there taking great images!
Good luck with your photography!
:)

I am in the same boat as you. Too poor.
And yes, seems like the Pro1/G6 crowd is not as rabid as the G1-G3 crowds tended to be. I guess at those times, the G series were top of the game, whereas the Pro1/G6 have been bested by other alternatives.
Ho hum.

Thats exactly it. We dont have time to bench race on the net about the latest gear and why we just sold our 300D to buy a 10D and only months down the line buy a 20D because we're using our creativity in the field :P
Powershots rule the world!!!!! :D :D :D

Well hey maybe this very active crowd can help me out.
I have an Elan and 420 per my sig.
I'm going to buy either a Drebel body or G6 after the holidays durng the Jan-Feb sales lull.
In anycase after lugging the SLR around all summer I find using the wifes point and click both refreshing and restrictive.
So the G6 with it's size and features is tempting me.
But to my point -- I've asked this before but didn't get and answer
Does the G6 use the AF assist on the Eos speedlights like the 420 and 550?
I love how much better my 420EX makes my Elan but I've heard some bad things about the Drebel and the 420 and I'm leary of getting the G6 simply for the hot shoe especially if it doesn't work that great with the 420.

Well first up, as a G3 owner with a 420EX flash, the AF assist light does not work on the flash, the technicalreason is due to the fact that the light is red and the camera uses the green pixels to focus with (there are twice as many green pixels to blue or red). I am fairly certain this is the case with the G6 as well.
Secondly, I bought a G3 a year ago, and my EOS30 (Elan 7) never had a roll of film run through it since. Since the G6 takes even better images, this may be even more the case. I supose that depends on what you are shooting.
In the end I misses the conrtol and speed of the SLR, so I sold the ESO30, and bought a 20D, now I have the best of both worlds 8)
I will keep using the G3 mainly for the reasons you have discovered with your wifes P&S. The G series does have most of the SLR type features and controls, just not as quick, and with a fixed lens.

they are mostly taken in Estonia, apart from fi (finland) and uk (UK!)
comments welcome.

...has everyone wandered off and bought DSLR's?
I guess I'm the odd one out then, as I bought my G-5 AFTER I had already purchased my 10D for some of the same reasons MrChad brought up, but also, I like having a NON interchangeable lens camera when I go four wheeling here in the dusty desert.
My G-5 is staying for a long time.
As a side benefit, the 550EX is equally at home on it. :D

Since the cost for a DSLR keeps getting lower & lower, more & more people will be buying them, I guess. Perhaps they think that a "real" camera will make them a "real" photographer.
While I have a DSLR myself, I'll never give up the smaller compact digicam - you can't beat it for travel! (And I refuse to call them "point and shoot" cameras).

Actually, all cameras today are point-and-shoot cameras (having automatic modes available).
But I prefer the term 'digital rangefinder style fixed lens camera' (though it is quite awkward, actually ;) )

Andy

I'm not sure how anyone can call a camera with the feature set of a G2/3/5/6 a "point and shoot camera"......I sure can't. An S400 - yes - my G5 - no way.

Back to the original Topic . . . maybe this forum's been around long enough to have most (if not all) G-series topics to have been discussed at some point.
I'm fairly new to this forum and I've been able to get a lot of questions answered by just doing searches and reading all your threads.
. . . plus, i'm trying not to get yelled at for not doing my research first

Yes I have noticed that most questions have been asked and answered over time, however I don't believe it is very nice yelling at people who ask questions already answered, so ask away :D
I would imagine that there are pleanty of G6 questions that haven't been asked yet!

I've had my G2 since it came out and its still an awesome camera that can't be beat (in terms of being able to take great pictures). I will probably get a DSLR soon, but won't ever give up the G2 - it's still got plenty of life left and I like the fact I can carry a versatile camera around in my cargo pockets. but there's things the DSLR can do that the G2 can't and I can't wait to get into that end of photography.

I'm with you Sam! My hardworking G5 is approaching 9000 images - in 8 months. Ouch! Now, does that mean I take lots of good pictures? Nope, but I think you get better the more you practice. Flash photography is challenging, and requires a lot of experimentation....
I guess for me "busy taking pictures" extends to "busy participating in photo contests" too, which takes time away from this forum, at times. But for a few ideas on what a G5 can do, with little photoshopping, take a look at one of my online galleries, at
www.harberts.com/photo
And to wrap up on a high note, I'm with everybody who values the combination of image quality and portability - all my stuff fits in a small camera bag, always ready to head out of the door... Never felt that way with my A-1 and lenses. Maybe a digital rangefinder, one of these days, but no more SLRs for me...
