I just called Canon USA to report the following. Coolwalker siad to post this here as it may be of interest.

FWIW I had two lockups at the weekend whilst shooting a night time Carnival and bonfire. The first showed Err9X on P and the second locked the AE value at 0.0 during a Tv session. One needed an ON/OFF to clear, the other needed the battery removed. I don’t remember which was which.

There were lots of sudden extreme changes in ambient lighting and I shoot a lot with 3200 (it's great!). My 10D (kept despite my better judgement I’m glad to say cos it means two lenses can be available at once) worked fine in almost the exact same circumstances.

I'm a newbie here so if this is old news then I apologise. Are lockups still common with 1.0.5?

I've had my 20d(1.0.5) for about 2 weeks now. 500 images taken. I shoot mostly in low light, indoor concerts with stage lighting, no strobes. Shots are mostly 2.8 and 1.4 aperture and between 1/60 and 1/200 in Av mode. I've had no problems at all.

Good luck.

I've had mine for about a month and a half. It originally had 1.0.3 and I updated to 1.0.5. Zero lockups or problems of any kind (with either firmware).

The only time I have had lockup with 1.05 is when the grip was a bit loose and apparently causing it. I first thought it was the lens thing and turn camera on and off it seemed to fix it, but later had more problems and noticed the grip was a bit loose. Tightening the mount wheel seems to have fixed all the problems.

I have had mine for a couple of months now too and I experienced my first lock up's last weekend. I had rented a Canon 70-200 2.8IS and was playing around with it inside and i experienced several lockups with the AE 0.0 shown. Had to remove battery. FW is 1.0.5. Never had any problems before using my Tamron 28-200 or kit 18-55 lenses.

Had mine for 6-7 weeks now, about 2000 shots fired, a large percentage of that at iso 3200 & 1600.

It came with firmware 1.0.3, I upgraded to 1.0.5. Lenses changed with camera 'On' most of the time,
also let camera go to sleep, changed lenses - then woke it up - all fine.
Used inside and also outside in cold and damp conditions.

- no lock-ups whatsoever -

The lock-up thing is covered by warranty, right?

There not Common and I would bet the lens is the issue.. or the communication with the lens anyway.

OMG!!!! People, these cameras are computers in a camera body, they are going to have a hang up once in a while. Just like your desktop computer does, especailly running windows. My 300d probably had 5 lockups in the 6 months I owned the camera, no big deal, unless in happens more than once a shoot.

moderators please start a "report your lockup" thread in the 20d review page because of theses threads are getting very annoying. Am I the only one thinking this?

and NO my 20d does not have a lock up problem, just a little dust issue.

It's clear from the subject what the post is about. Just skip it if you don't like it.

I had 2 lockups in 2 months, both with firmware 1.05. Canon acknowledged that they tried to fix this problem with 1.05. So let's hope they succeed with the next version :?
