I've just discovered Linear Sharpen and have been unable to convert the TIFF files post-processing into JPEGs with the "Save As" feature in Photoshop 7 (which only gives me a RAW, PSD and TIFF option for saving). How do I do this? I need to in order to post at a website. Many thanks for responses.

You have to convert your image to 8-bits first (Image/Mode). JPEG isn't available for 16-bit files.

Thanks Sally. With all of the converting, etc., there's a lot of disk space taken up. What does one do to store files that are easily accessible and keep space available on your computer? I have a CD burner. Is it best to put files on CD and delete from hard drive or is there a better way?

I had a CD burner and I used to copy files across to CD every time I got to 630Mb worth - that left enough room for an HTML index to be included. I did this for RAW/THM files and for completed TIFF/JPEG files - seperate CDs for each type. Once the files were burned and verified (v. important) I then deleted them off the hard disk.

Now I have a DVD burner, so will be doing the same - just the trigger point will be around 4Gb.

I do much the same as Chris except I don't bother to save PSD files unless I have done a serious amount of editing. I figure it's easy enough to recreate from the raw files.

I would also say that you should make two copies of the raw files. These are irreplaceable and CD's do go bad. They also have a limited lifetime, so they should be checked every couple of years.

I appreciated your question as I had the same one. Now a subsequent issue. How do I convert several 8 bit tiffs to jpegs at one time? Is there an automated command or batch process as I prepare pics for the web?

Rachel,

You can create an action to do this for images in the same folder. In the actions palette, create a new action and record the following steps:

File>Open (choose an image)
File>Save As JPG (choose settings as required)
File>Close

Stop recording.

The use File>Automate>Batch. Choose the action you just created and specify the source and target folders. Make sure you click over-write open and save as.
