Just received a new 17" CRT Viewsonics to be used in my dual monitor system. Powered up fine, but there are these continuous wisps of red, green, and blue along the bottom 1/2 of the screen that are discoloring everything. I tried two different graphic cards with the new monitor, still the same. I also degaussed, changed resolutions/refresh rates, and rebooted a few time. My other two monitors are fine, which leads me to believe this is defective. However, before I go through the RMA process with NewEgg, I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

I'm just guessing here. Couldn't that be interference? If RFI from the motherboard were leaking into the video cable, or else leaking into the CRT electronics?

Just for an experiment, but some RF shielding in there. It can't hurt.

Mu metal is good, but most any solid metal should work.

And try shutting the other monitor off, and get rid of anything electronic like a clock that might be near it.

Sounds bad though.

If there were interference, wouldn't it be affecting my other monitors as well? Also, I tried this new on my son's CPU on the other side of the room; same thing. Guess it is going back.

Could you have accidently gotten too close to a strong, unshielded magnetic field, such as a loud speaker? That will cause what you're seeing.
Degaussing will usually fix it if that's the cause of your problem.

RF interference is definitely black magic. It can come out of virtually any electronic device, even the lowly keyboard, that is not Tempest-rated.

I saw interference from one device to another one time, and I could wave my hand between the two and watch the interference effect change. The term here is "RF susceptibility" and it can change with the phase of the moon (almost).

The cheaper manufacturers will cut costs by skipping or faking their FCC compliance tests on equipment. Part of that is the device making the interference and part of it is the device, like the monitor, that is getting hurt by it. It can be difficult to sort out which one is at fault.

I'd say the monitor is the issue. Return it.

Souns like a "poopy" monitor... make sure there aren't any magnets around... and then trade that "pooper" in.

Yeah, I'll try a couple more things when I get home from work to make sure it isn't some sort of interference. If it's still bad, well, an unplanned trip to UPS tomorrow.
