Modeling: How to get the shots you want

Any tips on how to direct your "models" for photo shoots and the likes? It seems to have been awkward for me my first experience around and would like to hear what everyone has to say. Tips and tricks please!

I always try to meet with my models before the shoot, explain what I'm looking for from the shoot, and discuss how I will direct her. If it's a new model I will often have tear sheets from various magazines and catalogs that show the type of pose I'm looking for in the image.
