Since I plan on getting a 300d I should be getting a memory card along with it. I plan to shoot in RAW or high quality jpg at max resolution. How many RAW pics could I get on a 1 GB card? Would it be worth getting a 2GB? What brands are good for the 300d and right fast?

I know my reply won't be conventional, but how about trying jpeg/L until you feel comortable with the camera.

I concur. I still have my 256 mb as the single card I use.

512MB is the sweet spot as far as capacity/dollars go right now.

you can put about 100 RAW images on a 512 with the DRebel.

Ok Thanks everyone. Ill probably get the 2gb one. Since I like to travel I want to get alot of pics on one card. I would rather shoot in RAW because I have more control over my images when I get them on the comp (colors and stuff).

i should correct myself -- prices on memory changes so fast! 1GB seems to be the sweet spot today. 1GB is easily $50-65, and 2GB is $130-180.

I personally use Lexar cards. You can get 1GB cards for a good price...two 1GB cards can be less than a 2GB card if you find the good deals.

I find that when I am doing a shoot a single 256 mb card is no where near enough. I just picked up a couple of sandish ultra 512's. I may return one, but I would say 512 is the minumum.

As for brands, I have both Lexar and Sandisk. I have only recently acquired the sandisk but it seems to be widely used. The lexar has been rock solid for me.

That's weird.. I only get about 60!

with a 512 sandisk ultra, the hack and the raw+small jpeg setting I get close to 80. As far as I can tell I have done everything I can to maximize the amount of raw's I can stash on a card.

Does the hack do anything to the RAW format? I'm using the Lexar 512 40x WA flash, RAW+small jpg. no hack

off topic: IS the hack relatively safe/stable?

Well it is been awhile since I thought about it and my camera is at work so I can't check. I thought that you could only set the size of the 'embedded' jpg with the hack? I thought that it was always raw + med jpeg. So with the hack you can drop the size of the embedded jpeg to make room for more raw files ;-)

So I believe with no hack you are recording raw + medium jpeg which would account for you lower amount of pictures. LExar is great although the WA does nothing for the 300D.

Ahhh... "I see said the blind man to his deaf friend" :-)

Now to go about getting the hack... I hope I dont' kill my camera in the process...

I just saw how cheap CF cards are in the US and want to buy a 1Gb. Approximately how many jpegs can I fit into it? High quality at max resolution. On my current 256Mb I can fit 70-77 images when in P mode.

Ok, in Lg/Fine you get 409 pics/362 pics respectively
RAW 162 pics/153 pics respectively
In Small and Med Normal and fine both ISOs, it is in excess of 999. That is all that shows.

Thanks Canuck. Sounds good to me. Was going to ask my folks for one this Xmas, but might just ask a friend in US to buy and send me instead. Gosh, they're almost half the price compared to Sweden! Lenses are cheaper too. It's so unfair. :(

Try setting in-camera sharpening to minimal (-2 or whatever the units are). Does not affect raw, but should make the embedded jpeg-s even more smaller. Maybe worth setting the contrast and saturation to minimal as well

And I thought the US was crooked till I went to the UK and the 17.5% VAT, and the approx $1.90 to £1 extortion rate and well....OUCH!!! I can't help that the powers that be levy ungodly taxes. That is as far as I am going on that one. :)

By the way, the info I provided was with a 1GB Lexar 40x card and in Manual mode on a 10D with over 11K pics taken on it.

I just puchased a 4GB card - Kingston elite Pro high speed - ($498 Can$ from http://www.softmagic.ca/dept.asp?dept_id=08-004). Card works great.

I found I was filling my Ultra 1GB card quickly with the 20D rapid fire; RAW files can fill a 1GB card with 15 to 20 rapid fire sequences.

This is dependent on what you are shooting as well. I have noticed that while I take pictures the counter does not decrease when certain subjects are photographed.

So YMMV..........

The "frames available" is an estimate based on normal file size at the indicated ISO. I've gotten up to 700 (LF) JPEGs on a 1 GB (Microdrive, so true 1 GB) card when photographing aircraft in flight.
