The day was pretty overcast and made it difficult to get good bright colourful shots.

Auto exposure did you in. Next time:
Airshow guys - prop freeze? (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=229542)
Try manual in those tough conditions. First set the f-stop & shutter speed you need. Then adjust the ISO. Need an exposure crutch? (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=89123)

Let me guess... you were at Wanaka on the Saturday as well? :)

Yep....3 day pass probably the only way to catch the good weather...

Yeh next time we are planning on shooting the static display on the Friday and flying display on Saturday. 3 day pass wouldn't be a bad idea.
