I would say it's about equal to Canon's USM, like the 24-85 or 75-300.

I use this Tamron, and can say that it is much slower than Canon's USM lenses. As for sports, it depends. This lens is definitely fast enough to shoot golf. Hockey, not so good.

I don't know what's wrong with all of your guys Tamrons, but mine is rather quick at focusing. I definately wouldn't call it slow!

The Tamron is quick, but its not very quick.
I would say that its slower then the usm or atleast slower then L's. I assume L usm is the same as any other usm, I have never owned a non L usm............

I still think the speed is pretty sufficient, its not instant like its Canon brother, but its good.

Man you guys should try the Tamron 28-105 f2.8. An AMAZINGLY sharp lens from everything I've seen printed (16x20 and larger from a D1S) but talk about the worlds slowest focusing lens. I played with one for a while and I think it was as heavy as my 100-400 and just slow as molasses. Tamron can make better lenses than Sigma if they want to. I just wish they would more often!

I would say it focuses about as quick as my 1.8, maybe slightly faster. Much quiter than the 1.8 for sure.
It is also quieter than the Sigma I sold to get this lens (18-125)

I stood out front of our store the other day, put my 10D in continuous shot mode, and tracked several cars coming down the road at 45mph. Not a single one of the 30 something shots came out out of focus. They were all sharp! So I gues it focuses fast enough.

It's definitely slower than USM lenses on my D60. I'd say AF speed was similar to the Sigma 15-30, and noticeably slower than the Canon 28-135 IS.
