A friend of mine is in the process of deciding which digital camera to buy and is now thinking that maybe a digital video that also takes still shots would be the way to go. Has anyone had much to do with these types of
cameras?

Mick,
Great question! I have friends who have asked me the same question because they assume I am the photo guru because of my equipment.
And, I guess I am. At least in relation to the hours spent in research on my side versus their "Let's just ask Chris", I am a photo God!:) Imagine that.
So, to be a very good friend who gives the very best advice, I have always told them; "If you want to make movies, buy a really good digital cam-corder. If you want to make stills, buy a really good digital camera." There just is no middle ground for the true photographer. Which is actually another way of saying, "You've asked the wrong guy."!8)

Mick,
.... what *he* said! :D You really should buy the right tool for the job. If videos are really important to you, and photos are only an afterthought, then you *might* get by with a good digital camcorder. If still photos are what you really want, you MUST buy a good digital camera. You just will not be happy with anything else...
Greetings from Wollongong, NSW! :)
