can't seem to find this in the instructions for my unit...
I can get my 430EX flash unit to strobe when attached to my camera but how do I get it to do the same when controlling unit from an STE2 IR controller?
is this possible?
I am pretty fuzzy on the technical side of flash use... how does the zoom control and setting affect the light? I assume wider but weaker for say 24mm - opposite at 105?
what speed is the burst of light from a flash unit like this? is it set? is it reducable?
sorry for all the questions.

clippo, here is a link to a PDF of the 430EX manual. I think you can find most of your answers by looking through it: 430EX manual (http://www.groovydos.com/Tom/430EXManual.pdf)

thanks - had a look through but can't find anything specific about stroboscopic use of the unit wirelessly... as siad, it works when on the hotshoe but not when controlled by my STE2.
Also, it doesn't mention what flash actual speed is or how to adjust it (I know this may not even be possible).

Hi clippo. I was not aware that the 430EX had the stroboscopic functionality. Can you tell me how you get it to work on the camera because I would like to try it with mine?
Also, you mention "flash speed" and I assume you are talking about flash duration? If so I believe there are some people on here who know that as I'm pretty sure I have seen it posted here before, perhaps someone else will post that info in this thread. I believe that you cannot adjust the flash duration yourself.

I didnt think the 430 had stoboscopic either but i could be wrong. You should be able to adjust the speed of the flash via the manual power settings.Obviously this will reduce your working distance but will freeze action if the ambient light is low enough.

well it bursts multiple times when I set to my 40D to rapid shutter H. Is this not classed as strobe operation? it'll only do for the first 2 or 3 frames.

thats interesting thanks - will try that.

I would say that is strobe operation. :) I believe that I took the term "stroboscopic" that you used in an earlier post (post #3, I believe) too literally. Some of these units have a stoboscopic mode which can be used to achieve some interesting visual effects but the 430EX lacks that function. Here is a thread with some sample pics if you are interested:

That isn't what I'd call stroboscopic operation. It's just trying to keep up with the camera and whether it can or not depends on how much charge remains in the capacitor and that depends on how much light was needed to properly illuminate the scene. It really can't recharge from batteries fast enough to keep up with the camera's burst mode if the capacitor is drained.
