Photos like this seem to be the big trend in automotive photography and I have to say, i'm in love!!!!!!
My question is how do you go from a real life photo taken with a DSLR camera to a result similar to what you see? I've tried using Lomo photoshop actions which come about 40-50% of the way close to a final result as above but its still not quite there.
Are there some tips or directions anyone could give me to head down the path to getting photos in this style?
Am I wrong in assuming that 90% of the effect of this style of photo is in the post-processing and not the actual camera doing the picture taking?
What is this style even called?
Thanks for any help!

I'd have to say that prolly 80% is starting with a great photo and that comes from great light. Sun+Reflectors, Strobes, Hot Lights, etc... it really doesn't matter.
In this shot they went to a specific location (probably scouted well in advance) at a specific time of day to get a specific effect. Top shots don't happen by accident. They start out being as good as you can possibly make them before the image even hits a computer.

Given how good the lighting is on the car I'd say there's a very good chance that the car was shot in a studio and placed in this shot.

That is also entirely possible...

dont forget that CGI is also of a high enough quality these days and is sometime prefered to photography

Well he also has a rig for the camera, cause the car is moving.

Guys, there are hundreds of photos in this style, I dont think its CGI. The style seems to work really well in automotive photography because they are the ones that seem to do it mostly. I think they are just heavily post-processed photos. There must be a name for this style to kick off a google search?

Funny how her hair isn't moving.
I think this is a heavy composite or a CGI.

Could have been shot from a camera platform...

Well, I think you did pretty good with this shot here! :D
I see no room for improvement, so just keep on keeping on and you should be fine.

I just played around a bit for a few minutes, to see what I might be able to achieve in a graphic look, based upon a totally real photograph and came up with this as a start, to show what is possible without CGI coming into play

It's amazing what you can do with some PS these days...
Start with this:

Add the car... (sorry, I don't have the original handy, but it was taken at a car show)
Bammo... You can give yourself something like this:

This actually isn't the "finished" image. There was a bit more work done later to finish it up, but it's on my other computer.

Your photos are certainly nice but they are very different then these examples which give a more "comic" effect to the picturs. What I mean by comic is that the shapes appear somewhere inbetween photography and art/drawing.

if you look at the shadow of the car. while at the photo, it was "supposedly" lit with the sun, the shadow isn't parallel but instead looks like the light source seems to be yards away instead of millions of miles away.
from that alone, it is definitely not shot on scene.
