View Full Version : Is my 50 f/1.8 a little soft on the AF?

I'm curious if my camera or lens my be front focusing or back focusing. Here are a couple of shots taken handheld (so as always, I could have swayed just a bit before snapping the shutter button).

It just seems that the stump isn't as in-focus and as sharp as I would have expected from the 50 f/1.8 after all the great reviews I've heard about it.

Is something not right? Or is this pretty much what I should expect from the lens?

Thanks

Check and see what the camera actually focused on. It could be that stick right in front of the stump. That would explain the very slight front focus. Ortherwise, that photo is sharp.

Hmmmm.....How do you do that?

Poor, poor test. You're not going to truly know if you're handholding and aiming at a lump of dirt next to a stump surrounded by straw. Even if you aimed at the stump, it's *curved*. You have no true idea of the plane of focus. The little stick is too small to accurately gauge that it it the focus point.

There's been many discussions here on how to test for front- or back-focusing. Please check one out.
