I'm not crazy about the first three...something about the shadows, I think. And maybe the rice being too bright. But, I like the next four. Love the colors.

Agree with suzyb about the lighting. You want more than one source of light that is diffused or softened to remove the harshness.

The red background cloth is too cluttered/busy. Just a white tablecloth with no creases looks great IMHO. Fill the frame more like the 2nd shot and have the main food item at the front or to the bottom left or right of the plate. Use props like napkins, cutlery etc.

Great first shots though, just a little refinement IMHO.

I agree with the shadows on 1 and 3.. otherwise I think they all look great! Oh, and did I mention mmmmm!

Your close, it actually the speculairity or hardness of the light source. What you normally do for an image like this is use a softer light source for the overall exposure usually backlit, so the shadows fall toward the camera and then use a harder light source a -1/2 under that one from the fron/side to bring out more detail.

I've seen these kinds of shots done in a lightbox. I'm sure that there might be a thread in the DIY areas that may be able to help you make a cheap one.
