Should I get an Ibook Photo to load my photos onto directly from the flash card? or is there a better bang for my buck, as they cost $470

I assume you meant IPod photo and not Ibook Photo?
That's a tough call. If you primary use is photos and video, I'd rather have (and will soon have) and Epson P-2000. If you primary use will be music, the iPod is probably a better choice. The Epson has a much larger, higher res screen, same 40Gb hard drive and is also around $500.
There are cheaper ones that don't have screens (just small LCDs for the controls), which can be had for about $130 with a 40Gb drive.

The new ipod does not have a CF adapter. Belkin makes an ipod CF card reader, but it is worthless. I had a friend test it out at his work. He said, and i quote, "After 20 mins and less then half of the 512 transfered i took the CF card out and put it away".

they are great for displaying photos on the telly and carrying around photos to show people, but not for storing photos or pulling off your cf cards... you have to transfer 'slideshows' from iphoto on the mac or adobe elements/album on the pc. it only stores a relatively small proprietary image on the ipod photo, not the fullsize image. you can, however store the photos just like on any other ipod - *s l o w l y* from the belkin card reader, or use firewire/usb2 from the pc.

Archos (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=333995&is=REG) is a well built and reasonabley priced MP3 player/audio recorder/digital storage device etc with a fast transfer rate.

Just like to add to the above, one of the options in syncing your iPhoto library to your iPod photo is to include full size images -- using a Mac. iPhoto is not available on the PC but I believe there is an option the Adobe product.
I use my iPod Photo 60g as an mp3 player, backup harddrive (for files, contacts etc.), and now for a extra backup device for my iPhoto library, which of course is also used as a slideshow -- connected to a tv.

thanks for all the advice! my main use for it is a trip to europe coming up in the summer... how easily can you transfer pictures straight from your flash card to the iphoto? thanks

I am a bit torn on this subject. The Ipod Photo is in my opinion utterly useless as a portable photo unload device without the cardreader. And no the cardreader is not something that You have to buy seperate and carry two devices everywhere.
There are other alternatives such as Archos, Xdrive, Flashtrax and many others.
As I started out with I am a bit torn on the subject of buying a device like this or buy more CF cards. In april next year I am hoing to Florida on a 3 week holiday. The first time I visited Orlando I had a film slr with me and shot 360 photos, on the second visit I shot 230 photos and on the last visit I just shot 60 photos. But the next visit will be the first with a digital slr so I know I will shoot a lot more than I did on the first visit. Maybe I will end up with 1000 photos or more. With that in mind I will need either at least 10 GB photodevice or CF 5 x 2 GB cf cards.

tommy - even if you use the card reader with the photo ipod, you will not be able to see your photos on it. you have to use a computer. you might want to look at an xdrive. i'm taking my wife to africa in april so we will take our xdrive out to the game reserve (in case we need it) and then transfer images back to the laptop (from cards and/or xdrive) and burn on dvds in the hotel. as it is, between us we have about 6 1/2 gigs of ultra 2 cards (plus a 512mb sd card i keep in the mkii for emergencies)
eos10dmacosx - i vaguely remember seeing that in the docs, but i don't use the photo ipod for storage. i only use the slideshows. it's great to show people on the screen and also on the telly - especially with music

I have never considered ipod as an option for me. If I go this way it will more likely be xdrive, flashtrax or a archos device.

I have the Archos 480 and could not be happier with it. Strongly recommended.

Read the responses of several people above....
The iPod Photo does NOT have a slot for CF cards or any other kind of memory cards. It is not meant to be a device to which you can copy your images to directly from a memory card. If you want to do it, it goes very slowly, as the people above say.
So if your main use for it is storing photos on it while you're on a trip, get something else which is made for the task you need it for. Don't get the iPod Photo.
