I found another toy in my dad's old camera bag, and was wondering if this would work on a 40D? I see it has TTL capabilities (not sure what that means yet, but I have seen you guys talking about it). Any help would be appreciated.

khaz, I've got one also and I tested the trigger voltage on it. 7.2 volts. So I put it on the 20D and fired it a few times. It seems to work just fine. With a max voltage of 250 volts, it should be OK to use this flash with the 40D.
To use it, set your camera to manual with shutter speed anywhere up to 1/250th sec.
Look at the scales on the back of the flash.
- Set the scale for the desired ISO. Note: Set the ISO on your camera to the same setting.
- Set the scale for whatever zoom your lens will be set for.
- Choose either of the automatic settings (A1 or A2). The f/Stop setting will be what you need to set your lens aperature at.
- Adjust the flash head for whatever zoom you are using on the lens.
You should be good to go.
Example settings:
ISO: 400
Zoom: 50mm
A1 setting: f/4 (with a range of about 9 to 60 feet)
A2 setting: f/11 (about 7.5 to 18 feet)
Note: The C/R stands for Canon/Ricoh
Hope you find this helpful.
Good luck.

That is perfect. I was trying the M mode last night, and everything was blown out. Your example worked great. Thank you.
