I went to the fabric store with my fiance today and I decided to buy some muslin to make my own backdrop since she had a 50% coupon. The fabric is 108" wide and I have enough to make a 9' x 15' backdrop. I bought white and black (twice the amount of white). I want to make two backdrops. The white looked thin so I will double it up, the black is fine as is.

My question is this... Should I sew (and by I, I mean have my fiance do it) back to back so I have on reversible backdrop or should I keep the two separate?

I never thought of sewing back to back. How will you be hanging them? If on a background stand with a rod that you run thru a pocket in the backdrop you will have difficulty swapping them around. Is the white too thin when doubled? Sew the white double?

I would go seperate. When the black is on top, the white would get dirty quick while at bottom.

Do them seperately, the black will bleed during the wash for a while, so you'll end up with black and grey back drops!

Thanks everyone. Really good points. I am going to double the white. I did think about the white getting dirty when on the bottom. Separate it is.

OK, so I've coaxed my fiance into sewing the edges of the muslin to make make me a white and a black backdrop. Now I need a stand. I don't want to spend a lot of money.

Does anyone know of a "good value" background stand? I saw some ebay stands for about $50 from SQUAREPERFECT

any suggestions?

Home depot is minutes away. A nice PVC pipe stand will work just fine and you can get into one for less than $20. You can also snazz it up with some black colored "plastic" spray paint.

You could also try a bike hanger for a more permanent solution. Makes it easier to raise and lower by yourself. I got mine at a local discount place for 5 bux. Just remove the claw hangers and put your screws right through the PVC or whatever you use as your cross memeber. Then you can raise and lower it all by yourself. I found it a pain in the butt to try and raise and lower stands with 9' paper rolls.
