View Full Version : Canon 420ex or Sigma 500-DG Super

I currently have a 420ex. I dont think its powerful enough for bigger rooms and wider shots.


Would the new Sigma 500DG Super be better than the 420ex? I dont have money for the 550ex or newer 580

From what I have seen in comparison tests, is that the DG Super is very close to the 550EX......Im in the same boat as you, as I cant really afford the 550 at this time.....so I myself am getting the Super.

If the sigma is capable of full manual then it should deffinatly be better then the 420. When I bought my 550EX that was the only reason. I new if I didnt get something that had full manual I would regret it. At the time the 550ex was the only one on the market.

The Sigma is capable of full manual mode by adjusting the power from 1/1 to 1/128, about 6 stops I think. You can also set the zoom of the ehad, the ISO and FEC.

Yes, it can be used in manual mode. I have not owned a 550EX (had a 380EX) so can offer no comparison, but I am very happy with the Sigma Super DG.

The wireless multiple flash is great, have two, will buy a third soon.

I have not tried myself, but others have said that the 500dg does work seemlessly with the canon flashes. Hopefully someone else here can confirm that.

If there were one created by Sigma, I can kind of guess what it would say. Or, if there were one created by Canon, I can guess what it says the same way.

The Sigma flash works great with the Canon EET flash system as a master. I've used it to control the 420EX and another Sigma. The Sigma is a very nice flash for the money.
