wow, that surprises me, I thought it may be the other way around. The 100 - 400 is on the 1.4 's list of lenses that it will work with but I don't remember seeing anything about the AF not working.
I just reread about it...............AF on lenses that are f4 and faster!!!!!!!!

Gramps depending on your Camra it will work ar 100 but not after that. My 20D will auto focus at F6.3 but can not above that.

Hi I understand that it is possible to trick the camera by taping some of the contacts on the extender. See http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=25345. I'm not sure how good this is and what problems it may cause (e.g. burning out the USM motor).

All I can say is you are talking about $3000 worth of equiptment, and I know I would not take a chance. What if the tape breaks off and gets in to the camera.
Besides the 100 to 400 has a allot of pull and anything that far off, your at infinity so focus is minimal and if its a head shot, to get it it has to be standin still to get head shots unless your that good an caan get them flying, I know I can't.

I have used this combo on the MkII (which offers full AF ) and it is not bad at all. You do lose a lot of light and the image quality degradation is noticeable.. but in most cases it is acceptable.
On a day when there is a lot of availbale light.. it works quite well.
As mentioned allready.. if you don't have a "1" .. then you won't have AF.
