I have recently purchased a Canon 40D & Canon EF 70-200 F/2.8L IS USM Lens.
Because I have a camera, a member of my family thinks I am qualified to take photos at their amateur female bodybuilding and fitness competition April 19. I could really use some advice for camera settings and technique to use for this type of indoor photography. I will not know the exact location or lighting conditions until the day of the competition.

This is my first Post, so if it belongs in some other area please let me know.

I think you will be okay with that lens but you may need a tripod, and a possibly a remote release.

When the competitors are doing their compulasry poses eg "front lat spread" they are to hold the pose for around 5-10 seconds. That will be enough time to get the shot. Find out if you can use flash. Also try and get there early and get at the centre of the audience.

When they perform their evening round (to music) you will need a fast shutter to catch their floe to the music.

The lights are bright and hot spots shining directly down on the competitor to show muscle defination. This is why they where Tan.

Hope this helps.

If you can get hold of something like an 85mm 1.8 you can move around to a good spot and go hand held, maybe.

All the best

Thanks for the information.
My second Lens is the Canon EF-S 17-55 IS. It will be in my bag if needed. And I have a remote release. I was wondering if a Lens Hood would ever be needed for an indoor photo session like this.

I was wondering if a Lens Hood would ever be needed for an indoor photo session like this. You never know where flare might come from & it will impress the natives? ;)
