I use Av almost all the time and switch between AI Servo and One Shot AF. The reason I use Av most of the time is because I know what DOF I am after and it is usually wide open. This also gives me a faster shutter to freeze action. I adjust ISO up and down to get the shutter speed I want if the current shutter speed is too slow or overkill. The only time i use Tv is when I am trying to motion blur on purpose like with panning. Then I want a lock on the shutter so I can get consistant results. The only time I shoot in manual is if I am using flash for more than just a fill... which for sports is rare that I ever use any flash at all. But i will use EC (Exposure Compensation) when not in manual to counteract tricky lighting.

i was thinking about av mode + ai servo also, i try one shot and av but i couldnt get some shot i wanted so yea. i been shooting mostly one shot but i'm going to try ai servo, i heard it hit and miss sometime so yea

They can be good for certain conditions. If the lighting isn't changing anytime fast, and you know the right exposure, why take a chance on the camera meter mucking it up? This is when I would shoot manual. If you're running around shooting in different spots and the light is constantly changing within seconds, then maybe the other modes could be useful.

it depends on lighting, the sport, as well as the camera.

if you are using a camera with so-so AF, poor light, and very fast sport, it might make sense to do everything manual, including exposure and AF. it has happened before!

so the answer is "it depends" and therefore you need to give us more information otherwise we are just guessing.

AI Servo (single focus point) and Av mode - I shoot mainly indoor sports/dance, so I'm usually shooting wide open. If the lighting is really good, I just stop down
