I was wondering...is there a chance of an 70-200 2.8 IS update this year?

In my opinion no. It is a very popular lens that has great resale should you need it--- performace is fantastic. It is a tad bit heavy though.

One thing I don't understand...why are they not going to have a small update and add the newer IS (like the 70-200/4 has)?

Because it might not be that "small" of an update. I don't know the inside of the IS system, but I'm quite sure it's way more than just some easy software/hardware fix. The glass has to be arranged differently and so forth, so I see no point in Canon updating the lens just to add 1 more stop in the IS, not now anyway.
Think about the 100-400L, which is 10 years old and still have the 1st gen IS in it — might be ready for an update soon, but they have been saying that for some four-five years already

I don't think so. It has been one of the prime lenses canon has offered. Yes, its expensive but then its worth it.
