View Full Version : Low light - redish yellow problems

I recently bought the 50mm 1.4 for taking boxing matches in low light. I covered my frist event tonight, and the pics aren't really dark which is good, but they have a redish/yellowish tint to thm that makes them look kind of yucky. Flash wasn't allowed. I captured at 320 f/1.4 for all of them. Any ideas? 320 isn't that fast of a shutter speed. Fortunately none of them were blurry. Thanks

Any ideas?

First of all, what camera were you using?

What exposure mode was it in?

What was the white balance set for?

The typical reddish-yellow glow comes from Tungsten lighting. Was that the lighting at the event?

That's why you should use shoot in RAW - this lets you to correct the white balance after the photo was taken.

I agree that it sounds like you shot for daylight in tungsten lighting. If you didn't shoot Raw, you can fix it in a photo editor. In PS CS or PSE open up the image and then use Levels. Click on the Grey eyedropper. Then click on grey or a neutral color. That should help reduce the reddish yellow cast.

Hi guys,

Here are a couple of photos. This was on a 300d at 1/320 shutter. I thougth of turning down the shutter but was afraid I'd start getting blur and figured it was better to have no blurr than a brighter image.

The white balance was set to "auto" ISO 800. Please let me know why they look like this, and anything I might do in photoshop to correct it. I've played around with brightness and contrast to no avail.

Thanks again

P.S. I actually did lighten the second one a bit trying to get it to look right.

And on a side note, the 50mm was an awesome lens for this type of venue - no blurr on a single pic, and I even got a shot of a guy jumping in the air about 4 feet with zero blurr.

Did they maybe have sodium (high intensity sodium's almost white to the eye) in the arena? I'd try using the white stripe on the one pair of trunks and the Armstrong pad on the post as your "white" settings using the method Scott described above (dropper).

Please tell me what you think of these:

The colors of the ropes in the pictures look like they looked to my eyes last night.

Thanks

yeah, I thought this was boxing? :?:

Anyway, you don't need to shoot RAW to adjust white balance, you just need to get your hands on photo processing software.

Thanks Adam.

And mdude85, I say "boxing" because it offers up the exact same lighting challenges so people know right off how to respond to my questions. This lens did very well on the recommendation of bob levy (www.boblevy.com) It's made for boxing!

More pix to come, and thanks so much again.

Have you tried using the Color Cast correction then Levels?

No I just tried adjusting the levels per advice from here... Where's that located? in another picture I haven't put up yet, you can see why the light came across that way. There are these HUGE dome-shaped lights that put out yellow/orange light.

I wonder if I should have used a custom white-balance fixaed on the white "Armstrong" sign in the corner? Having to apply these changes to every image is a pain :(

Sorry, if you are using PS Elements you can use Color Cast, if not then you would have to use Levels in PhotoShop CS Etc.

Take a coffee filter with you next time. Click your lens to manual, put the coffee filter over the lens , point it toward the subject you will be shooting and take a shot. Then use that photo to do a custom white balance. Works great and you can carry it in your shirt pocket.

Great action photos by the way.

A bit off topic...

What sport is again? :?

It's called "MMA" or "mixed martial arts." It's basically "anything goes" but no biting and eye gouging.
