Thanks to all the helpful comments from Robert, Curtis and Walt, I am really starting to get the handle on this flash thing.
From Saturday night:

Would never have been able to get this type of shot last year. Plus, I did this on the fly in like 1 minute. The knowledge I have gained here at POTN is invaluable.

PS - Excuse the lousy PS out of my son's braces. Still learning that!

That's pretty good. Glad you are getting the hang of outdoor flash. It looks like you had the flash on a bracket as well? i like how the background ambient light is balanced with the flash so it isn't just drowned out.
The next things to try is to make the light off-axis. Not always easy with one light, but experiment with it. Bounce where/when you can. Not always possible, but can be done more often than most people realize. Sometimes you just have to be resourceful. But you are off to a good start here!
It looks like the image would benefit with a little more contrast, a bump in the highs.

Ron,
You are correct - I purchased a CB Junior Bracket last year and having the flash off camera really makes a big difference. Just the bracket alone probably reduced my indoor flash shadows by 50%.
Thanks for the metering compliment. That has been my biggest challenge - getting the background metering correct so that the flash does not over power the background.
And thanks for the PS suggestion.
