View Full Version : LCD Screen Protection?

Hello All,
Hopfully in the coming week I'll have my new 20D, I've spent the last few weeks getting prepared with various accessories that I know I'm going to need.
In many of the posts I read on this forum I've seen advice for cleaning/protecting lenses, cleaning the sensor, the camera, etc.
My question is: Does anyone use these (http://www.crown-digital.co.uk/ishop/883/shopscr234.html) or this type of protection for their LCD screen and if not, then what, if anything do you use?
My G5, LCD screen did get vey scratched, even though it was a flip-screen, I would normally forget to flip it back and also found it to be somewhat impractical to do so. Since the 20D screen isn't, I would like to protect it, if this is possible. I'm somewhat sceptical about a piece of sticky-backed plastic being able to give the LCD that much protection.
Thanks for any help.
Cheers David

to be honest, i don't think you need it. the screen is pretty tough plastic. if you do mnage to scratch it, you can have it replaced pretty cheaply from canon. some people here have quoted the screen covers on the mkii and 10d as cheap as US$10?!
i havent used them and haven't received a scratch, and i can be rough sometimes...

I use a a screen protector on my 10D you can buy a pack that has three sheets in it about the size of a PDA then you just cut it to the size you need, peel back the backing paper and stick it on you get a screen wipe and an aplicator to flaten it down. It will stop the screen from getting scrached and if it does get a bit marked or gruby then you can just peel it of and put on a new one

On the 20D the lcd screen isn't exposed -- there is a hard plastic cover, which is replaceable (there's another thread concerning this somewhere) and the cost is around $20 for a replacement cover (if I recall correctly from that other thread.)
I put on a similar cover (one meant for a Palm PDA) and I found that even though I could see the picture through it, it did darken it a bit and I wasn't able to see the picture I took as well as I would like.
My Sony Mavica had an exposed LCD screen that could get scratched easily and cost several hundred dollars to get repaired, so I used a cover on that to save such an expense. With my 20D I'm leaving the screen exposed, and in 3.5 weeks of pretty strenuous use, in and out of the bag, sitting on my desk, slung around my neck, riding on the floor of my car, there isn't the least sign of any scratch.

that's what i was referring to... the hard plastic clear cover is over the lcd itself. it's pretty darn durable and cheap to replace

This is possibly the same type of treatment that my own camera can expect. It's good to know that the screen isn't exposed and should it need replacing that it's not going to cost the earth!
Thanks for taking the time to reply.

On the 5 canon SLR's I have owned, I have never scratched an LCD cover yet. I tried a protector once, but that lasted about 4 seconds as it screwed the view totally.

I bought a protector from these folks.....

The only drawback is that it does cut down the brightness down a bit, but it can be adjusted for. Also cuts the viewing angle just a bit, but it's minimal.
I can't complain for $6.

A brand new cover from Canon is $10.

Wow, didn't know it was that cheap. Is the one one the Digital Rebel that easy to replace?

This is the one with the exposed LCD screen.

I got an lcd protector for my 300D on ebay
The last camera I owned went camping with me one weekend and I sat is on a rock for a few secs... I hit it off the rock accidentally when I went to pick it up and even though it had only fallen a few cm the screen was scratched right across.
Didn't want to take that risk with my 300D. You can get protectors that can be applied with just a dab of lens cleaning fluid - it doesn't sound like it will hold very well but it really does! No worries about damaging the screen with adhesive stuff.
I haven't found that my lcd visibility has been affected at all by using it either.
Hope this helps!
