Other that Lowepro, Tamrac and Burton, are there any other brands worthy of looking at for a backpack that will carry gripped 40D and a few lenses? maybe even a 15inch laptop(optional)

I generally buy from B&H or Adorama. Both are highly reliable. If not the absolutely lowest prices around, they're among the best for outfits that won't try to sell you basic parts as extras, or up-sell you.

Adorama has a great price on the Kata R-102 (same as 103 but no laptop pouch) right now, $125 with free shipping. I ordered one from them through Amazon yesterday.

Looks like $160 for the R-103.
