You need webspace to attach a picture
If it was a paid wedding shoot I hope you were able to switch to a backup...

from what you are saying it looks like your submirror isn't working!
lift your mirror op with your finger and you'll probably see the submirror hanging down!! that's what's causing the black band.
if not it could be the shutter unit !!
there's nothing you can personaly do bout it!
but if you bought it in may, you still got warrenty!! so send it in to canon

Yeah I came to the conclusion that something was blocking part of the sensor so I looked in there and you were right the second mirror the small one under the first one was there so I put it up together with the first. FULL Frame again it wont lock a focus though so if you put the lens in manual focus it will take a full frame picture a lil soft Though Because of manual focus thanks so much for Your Help and thoughts At least I can take some Pictures over thanksgiving And then send it in to be serviced the next week . I have to leave my family and take all the TV Cameras and Cable to telluride CO from So California This wendsday and I was really looking forward to taking a few pictures while im on the roadtrip and away from home Have a Great Holiday All And Happy shooting !!

Can someone explain the difference in function of the mirror versus the submirror?

Submirror (http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=CanonAdvantageTopicDtlAct&fcategory id=111&id=2638)
A picture is worth a thousand words.

Interesting. However, my camera is not one of those listed with this submirror, so I won't worry about it.

I think that list is just those models in production the last time they updated the page, and not exhaustive. Yours probably has one as well; pop the lens and look at the mirror from the front - if you see a less-reflective rectangle in the center of the mirror, you've got one.

Yes, it must be true.
Canon is too busy making cameras to update their web page? I'm shocked.
I'm still trying to figure out what the "concave secondary mirror" actually does. Apparently it gets light to the AF sensor in the bottom of the box, and it must do that with the main mirror down.

Yes - the center of your main mirror is actually partially-reflective; some of hte light passes through to the secondary. Remember the Canon Pellix, F-1 High Speed and Eos 1N-RS? Same type of main mirror, just less of it involved.

That was before my time.
I didn't join the Canon parade until 1997.

If I'm not mistaken, this is the first time Bob Gross asks a question here :D

You would be mistaken. I think a search would prove that false.
It's just that I try hard not to ask too many stupid questions.
When I was in school, I made a point never to ask the professor any question unless I knew the answer, and I knew he didn't.

This is exactly what happened to our DRebel. We had about 7K shots in it. Don't be convinced that it will not pop down again. I did the same thing and popped it up with my finger, manual focused and took some more shots. After a while it popped down again and stayed in the way of the shots until I manually closed it again. We sent ours in for service.
