About a month ago I mentioned that I didn't like wide-angle lenses because I couldn't "see" in such wide angle. I was seriously debating selling the 17-40 so I could get the Tamron 28-75.

Yesterday I took 328 shots, all with the 17-40, and I never even thought about removing it, even though I had 3 other lenses with me...

Now I want wider.

Now I want a 10-22 for Christmas.

And I still want the 28-75.

Does it ever end?

Beautiful shots, Scottes. Every one of them. These amazing wide angle shots are killing me because the widest I have now aside from the kit lens is 28mm.

I'd like to wait to see if the upcoming Tamron 11-18mm will be any good. Other than that, I guess it's just the Sigma 12-24mm, Canon 10-22mm EF-S or Canon and Sigma 14mm primes. (Yes, I've researched this to death).

Beware what you might read about wider than 17mm on other threads, where some people will have you believe that 12mm will only get you 2 feet wider, or 1 inch on the screen when shooting mountains. :wink:

Thanks folks! I may be getting somewhere with this landscape stuff. Granted I've just about had to give up birds for the last 6 or 7 weeks.


These pics where on the edge of the White Mountains in New Hampshire. The first two are in the town of Chocorua, which is about 8 miles south of the Kancamagus Pass. The second two are in North Conway about 5 miles north of The Kanc.


1Ds MkII... Drool... For stuff like this it would be simply awesome. I should done some panos.

I know. I didn't get it either. It was a thread from yesterday about Lens Coverage in EOS Digital Cameras that Cyberdyne rightfully locked it as it was about to go off the deep end. All of the posters questions were being clearly answered, but I guess he just didn't like to see the correct answers.

I'm also giving that 10-22mm a hard look. Going from 17mm to 10mm we will be going from 67 degree angle of view to 97 degrees, even wider than current 17mm lens on full frame cameras!!! I've seen several 10-22mm samples popping up here and there, and the coverage is amazing, distortion is surprisingly low because of the crop factor, and lens flare is almost non-existent. These pics I found were taken with the Sigma 12-24mm, but check out how dramatic the angle difference is between 17mm and 12mm, which is 87 degrees. Imagine getting another 10 degrees on top of this with the 10mm?

These are gorgeous!! I especially like 1 and 2.

Any landscape shot that makes me want to be there is a success.

I look at these shots and want to be there in a canoe in the crisp morning air... and who knows, maybe catch a fish.

Great shots Scottes. I actually used my 17-40 for the first time in awhile today. It sure is a nice landscape lens. The only problem is it seems that wildlife know when you've switched from the long to short lens and start doing funny dances and stuff. :D
