At last Ive invested in a decent Digital SLR. Just got my hands on a cheap but new EOS 10D...and im hooked. My next dilema, thanks to the forums here I wantto start printing again. The darkroom gear is a bit rusty so I cant wait to get my hands on a decent photo printer. My only dilema is that Im a confirmed technophobe and at the sheer mention of DPI and pixels i glaze over and something goes shooting over my head. Id love to get as much advice as possible on printers, Epson or Canon... 1290 or 2200.... Hopefully in a few weeks Ill be back on loking for advice on Kodak Fuji or Ilford!

Thanks for all the advice in advance

Mick

I think you'll find us split clse to 50/50% on either the better Canon models, or Epson.

For me of course.. it's "Allways Canon" to borrow a phrase.

The best bang for your buck being the i960 for letter sized or smaller prints.

If you want larger format the i9900 offering prints up to 13X19" is the one to beat :)

I agree with CDS, the group pretty much splits up into Canon or Epson printers. I use an ancient one that prints up to 13"x19", so that covers me.

The initial cost of the printer will eventually be insignificant compared to the cost of the consumables (ink and paper). It is better to choose a brand and a model based on the way you print. For example, if you print only one 8x10 per month, you will want a completely different printer from the person who prints one hundred per day.

I have the same problem. I really like the Canon 9900. But I occassionally want to print a panarama longer than 19". The Canon won't do it to my knowledge.

So, I'm hoping Epson announces a replacement for the 2200 soon -- with all the new features of their R800 but in a 13" wide format.

Other than the maximum length difference, I think you'd be happy with either model!!
