I am after a shoulder bag to carry a gripped 40D and a 17-55 2.8 IS attached for general day use, maybe with a little extra room for one other lense.

Has anyone got any suggestions or experiences with bags they use...

Domke F-3x will handle that combo and your other lens. Might be big for just body and lens, though.

Jon the Domke F-3XB is one i have been looking at but does seem quite large, do domke make any smaller bags

In your case, the grip is the problem. Ungripped, it'd fit an F-5XB easily (my 5D and 24-70 with a 580EX fit in mine). But the grip makes the body just too fat to fit comfortably.

I bought the Domke F-3 thanks to Jon's help and I wouldn't say it's too big. It will fit a 40D + Grip + lens and another lens fine. It will hold a flash on one of the side pockets too.

It won't hold a tele like the 70-200 f2.8 IS mounted, but it will hold it unmounted with the camera (in my case, 1DMKIII) inside.

It's a nice bag for sure. My only complaint when I used it in my recent trip was that with the weight of the 70-200 f2.8 IS, the strap was kind of rubbing a little too hard on my shoulder causing some skin irritation.

I wonder if they have a padded strap as an option. I would be all over that.

The F-31 Post Office Strap. Like $20. Got 'em on all my bags.

And I carry a body and 70-200 mounted alongside a 24-70 in there. The bag has enough "give" for it. Top bulges some, but it closes up OK.

Nice. Does it have grips on it so it won't slide off your shoulder?

When you say you have a body with the 70-200 mounted, do you mean the 1D MKIII? If so, I take it you have it in the bag face down correct? And you've got the 24-70 in the space next to it correct?

So you must have the body sticking out b/c the 70-200 pretty much takes the entire height of the bag. Correct?

I have to try out different configurations. I know this bag kicks butt when I don't have to carry any of my teles.

The F-31's got a wedge-shaped high density foam (Ensolite or the like) pad to sit on your shoulder.

As to the 1D3/70-200 2.8. The camera sits above the side walls but the lips on the top completely enclose the camera. And the 24-70 sits next to it, with the supplied divider (loose) between them.

Just 'cause...Crumpler 4MDH should work for just that.

I have quite a bit of gear, and when I go anywhere I usually carry it all but now I am trying to just limit myself to a few pieces of glass. I have a computrekker and put my 40D gripped, 15mm, 50mm, 60mm, 10-22mm, 17-40mm, 24-70mm, 70-22mm, and 100-400mm all in it along with flash, batteries, cards, filters, expodisc, manuals, and hoods. It is QUITE a lug!! When Im traveling I throw my laptop in their too!!! WOW! I love the bag but I was in the market for a smaller shoulder bag and looked at the crumplers. I thought they were just hyped up and overpriced... Whhooaaaa... Yeah, they are pricey but NICE! I picked up the 6MDH. Worth every penny. I can fit my gripped 40D with lens, 17-40, 10-22 in it with a couple batteries, card, charger, and either the 70-200/100-400 or the flash with no problems. Periwinkle blue with the orange interior. The only reason why I chose that color is 80% of all bags are BLACK, I like to be different and I dont have to worry about the HEAT issue. That orange interior is WILD, as you can't lose anything in it!!! :)

Ive spent more time trying to find a bag that seems right for what i want than i have spent on picking my gear.

Still not sure .......does anyone have the Kata H-14 and if so how do you rate it ??

What gear do you have? That is the main question. I have seen this bag and if Im not mistaken the reason I didn't like it is its protection. Yes, it is padded but it is only has decent padding INSIDE THE BAG, IE: padded dividers. I felt the the padding AROUND the bag was lacking so if you set it down alittle hard or something like that, it may cause damage. If this is something you are going to fly with, them damn TSA freaks are BAD for handling gear. I had one guy sticking his fingers all over my glass and I got irrate with him and the supervisor came over and appologized. He was forcefully pushing on the rear elements and didnt make me happy. I did have a guy at Chicago O'Hare once who was extremly gentle with my gear pulling it out of the bag, taking off the caps, and putting it back in the bag. Then Ive had some lugs just DROP it back in the bag! errr... PADDING IS EVERYTHING! With all my crap I think my next one is going to be the pelican!!

I have the kata H-14 + the Kata S-308 Sling strap. Great combo that is comfortable, well made, and functional. May be a tad big for what you need to carry, but you will fill it quickly - trust me.

I also have a LowePro Toploader 65 AW that would suit your needs well. The LowePro is a more traditional design, but also well made and sturdy.

I prefer the Kata (I have the LP 65 AW in the FS threads - pm me if you want it :D ), but that's just me. ymmv.

Another vote for the F-3x. I have my griped 40D, 17-55, 580EX, and a couple other lenses in it as my daily bag with room to spare.

I have one. It will fit my 20d w/o grip and 70-200 2.8 and then has two outside storage areas for a flash, small lens, etc. It is what I use when I want to take a limited amount of gear. I have also added the sling that gives me a place to put filters, batteries, etc.

A Domke F5xb can fit a Canon 40D w/grip and lens. It will be a very tight fit sliding the body "width" side into the F5xb in the narrower position. This is opposite logic, but then you have the length of the bag for your lens.

I personally would look at the Mountainsmith Tour waist pack. I love the Mountainsmith Tour. I have multiple set ups for this bag and it is quite compact and hold a lot of equipment in various configurations, including a 40D w/grip and a lens attached.

You can read my detailed descriptions of the Mountainsmith Tour, and see detailed photos of how I pack mine,in a series of posts dedicated to this bag, on my blog, Flying With Fish (http://www.flyingwithfish.com), at this link:

just browsed quick through replies...but I'd suggest Think Tank for sure. Mine's in the mail right now.

I was searching around (just like you're doing) a couple weeks ago for my 20D and it was hands down the best case I found. I knew I wanted a toploader for sure as I want a compact case, with just enough protection and versatility to suffice.

Here's their website: http://www.thinktankphoto.com/ttp_product_DgtlHlstr.php (that's just the toploader link, they sell other kinds too). I got a Digital Holster 20 for my 20D, and am assuming the 40D would fit it too.

What's cool about these cases is that they have an expandable bottom to morph if you want to put a larger lens (or in your case, an extra lens under your smaller one). Come with a full rain cover, tons of protection and just look great. GL!

I have a Kata H-14, which I rarely use.

If anyone is interested, PM me. I am sure we can reach a fair deal.

Have you checked out the Tamarac Velocity line? I have the 8x but the 7x should be fine. I guess it's kinda like a cross between a messenger bag and a sling, that you rotate to the front of your body when you want to take it out and shoot. I like it as the camera is easily accessible without having to take the bag off. It's comfortable and it's light. There are two downsides. You can't wear it on the opposite shoulder. You can't take the other lenses out w/o taking the camera out first. I can live with both of those.

Yes i already have the velocity 8x.......its a comfy bag but a little awkward getting to the camera when i swing it round as it sits a little high on my chest, also with the battery grip on the camera its quite a tight fit.

I was wondering if you have any experience with the Mountainsmith Tour FX? (~$85) It appears to be a slightly larger version of the MS Tour and has 3 padded dividers among other things.
http://www.mountainsmith.com/products.asp?productId=235&categoryId=13&subCategoryId=27&subCategory2Id=0

I have a MS Tour that I bought in 1996 and have really enjoyed using it in the backcountry. I assume not much has changed in the design over the past 12yrs or so. I'm getting into outdoor photography now and will be shooting a lot with the 40D, 10-22, 17-40L, & 70-200 F4 and was wondering how this setup would work with the Tour/Tour FX bag?

Do you have any suggestions on how to use the regular Tour with photography gear? Specifically padding and such. My '96 Tour does not have padding anyware Do the new Tour's have a padde bottom?

Any other info would be great, especially if you've handled the Tour FX!

I've included two pics of the Tour FX (only ones I could find online that show part of the interior of the FX).

The bag I have for sale actually would work, the Budgie Smuggler. It's like a 4MDH although better made for accessories.

Takke a look @ the Domke F4. Inthe main compartment I can carry my 40d w/lens attached and have room for additional lenses or gear. Then of course there are the pockets on the outside., yet the bag seems small.
