I just bought a "New" 20D from Best Buy today. They have them on sale for $1519.99 for the kit.

I take some shots, and load the images to the computer. The camera connects with folder "135CANON" on the card. The images satsrted with number "IMG_3553.JPG"

I previously had a 20D (Long story...), and the installed software was still on my computer. Rather than reinstall everything, I just connected the camera, and loaded. However, my last folder on the previous camera was "109CANON", and the last imagfe was "IMG_0930.JPG"

Is this camera used? Does it already have 3500+ shots on it?

Thanks,

TMR

Where did the CF card come from that you used?

It came from my old Canon Powershot G2.

Was your old camera on 135Canon? The camera (20D) will check the camera and the card for prior use and use the highest number it finds. Even if you formated the CF card it will still find a number on the CF card. I had this same problem with my CF cards going from a 10D to a 20D. There is a post I made not to long ago describing how to reset your numbers to whatever number you want. Here is the post - http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=41718&start=0&postdays=0&postorde r=asc&highlight=doom1701e
Hope this helps.

P.S. I don't trust Best Buy worth a damn. Some of the employees there are kinda shady. I finally got my dad to get a cell phone, went to best buy, he applied, and they came back wanting a $1000 deposit. My dad has bullet proof credit, a house and a nice car. We left Best Buy without a phone, called Cingular (the phone company he was going to sign with) and they say they never received a request for a phone for him from Best Buy and they never require a deposit of $1000 from anybody. So, someone out there has my dad Social Security Number now. Sorry to rant, thats my Best Buy story.

Don't say that they are shady. Just say that some of the employees have flexible ethical standards.

also worth noting is that I sent my first one back after shooting over 800 photos with it and the shop specifically said it was to be sent back in such a condition that it was suitable for sale.
So I guess these shops just sell them again.

Yes, your camera will reset it's numbering if a card is inserted with shots from another camera on it.

You could have done it, or someone could have tested a camera in the store before you bought it.

Buy Buy would have no reason to sell a used camera. If someone returned that camera all Beast Buy does is send it back to canon and get full credit for the camera. More than likly the numebers transfered from your old card.

Don't put money on that! :?

I bought a hand held tape recorder a couple years ago. It had been a return and was marked down about 25%. They had taped the plastic packaging back together. Got home, opened it up and one of the spindles that turns the tape was broke and it was very visably broke. They had the tape and the reduced price sticker over it.

I brought it back with no questions and bought an unopened one but ended up paying full price anyway ... nothing lost but wasted time.

I was not talking about tape recorders! I was talking about cameras. Tape recorders do not have the same return policy as cameras do.

90% of canon cameras get sent back to canon if returned thru devo. that is why you will never see an open box canon camera for sell at any bestbuy. unless it is the s1is.

I do not shop at Best Buy anymore.

I didn't like their attitudes and the management policies on returns and refunds on anything they sold.

There is too much competition in the electronics retail induster to tolerate poor service and bad attitudes. The stores in my area promoted an air of arrogance amongst their employees and I often overheard misleading information being given on Computer Systems and Camera Equipment when I would shop there.

I much more prefer COMPUSA, where available, for this type of shopping.

In Ohio, Bestbuy was being investigation for repackaging returned and defective products. Not only tape recorders, laptop computers, etc..... It was all the Northern Ohio Television News Stations a few months ago.

OK people, I am talking only about CANON CAMERAS and nothing else!

I used to work for worst buy and I am very familiar with their policies.

I just upgraded my 300d for a 20d using best buys DEVO policy and only paid the difference of around $500 for the 20d and the 4 year service plan.

Ohio AG sues Best Buy over consumer complaints
Ohio is suing Best Buy Company Inc., claiming it engaged in "unfair and deceptive acts" stemming from customers' complaints about the retailer, state Attorney General Jim Petro said Thursday.

Petro said he received hundreds of complaints against the Richfield, Minn.-based electronics and appliance store chain.
Representatives for Best Buy declined to comment on the lawsuit Thursday afternoon.
Customers alleged Best Buy repackaged used goods and sold them as new, and failed to honor rebates, refund and exchange programs, and extended service contracts. Customers also accused the company of failing to honor implied warranties, providing substandard customer service and making misleading statements
The attorney general is asking the company to pay a civil penalty of $25,000 for each violation of Ohio's Consumer Sales Practices Act. The attorney general's office hasn't tallied the complaints, saying more counts may crop up or a judge may disallow some complaints.
"The sheer number of complaints coupled with the types of allegations my office received prompted us to file this lawsuit," Petro said in a press release

I had the problem with my 20D and I got mine the day it came out, so I know it wasn't used. My file numbers transfered over from my D60. I forgot how I started the file numbers over, but I did do it...Dean

I bought mine from best buy too. I used my CF card from my g3, the 20d read the numbers stored in the card and used the next number when I took my first 20d photo  .

Yes, mystery solved. I used my old card from my G2. The numbers now make sense.

Sorry, but thanks,

i'm glad you figured it out. it gets lots of people who have 1 or more canon cameras.

I managed to have a rather amusing incidend of such, in the 2 Canon camera world. I was visiting my brother in NYC and he was wondering how many pics he could get w/ a 1GB card. I took it out of my 10D and handed the CF card to him. It renumbered his A70 to have over 10,000 shots which I know there was no way he has taken that many pics. IT took the numbering from my 10D. D-OH!!! It seems that he isn't too bothered really. Weird.

Not just 2 Canons. If you have a card from any other camera using the standard JEITA DCF spec which has a higher file number on it, you'll see a jump. I pulled a card from my D60 into an Aiptek webcam, and it immediately started a new folder, numbering after the highest-existing Canon folder. When I put the card back into the D60, it also started a new folder, numbering after the Aiptek's folder.
