This game is to help those of us who are trying to learn new tricks when it comes to editing.

Here's the breakdown of the game. I will post a picture that I choose, resized to exactly 800 pixels maximum on the long side. Outside of being resized it has to be unedited...meaning no adjustments to any levels, it has to look like it did as it came out of the camera.

The game will last 48hrs and whoever can produce the best edited image (as judged by me) will be picked and it'll be their turn to post their unedited picture for all of us to take a crack at.

The participants must have their "Image Editing OK" turned on and they must provide at least a simple breakdown of how they edited the image, some entrants are a little vague on this point, please give us all details so we can learn and share tips. For instance if you use the unsharp mask tool or Smart Sharpen, provide us with the adjustments you used so others can try them out.

You can post multiple images, but the first image you post will be the one that is judged - all other images will be considered for knowledge and tip use only.

Also, please keep all comments, be they positive or negative, to yourself until after the game has ended.

If you happen to be the winner of the game please start the next one with the title of the game and the following number. For example…the next game should read (Before and After # 48 ).

This is all about having fun so have at it!!!

This game will end on Thursday, April 17th at 10pm (EST)
Might allow for just a couple extra hours as I'll be sleeping at the time ;-) (3am South Africa)

Straightened
Added width to the picture to turn it into a panoramic size. Copied a section of the water.
Added blue to the sky.
Reduced the yellow in the water.
Brought up some of the shadows on the people.
Added a little contrast.
Usual noise reduction/sharpening.
Added border.

Straightened
Increased Contrast
Masked off the boat, layered blue
Darkened the sky slightly
Very little USM
Tried a new border technique... mainly just cutting out the edited image border to reveal the unedited below, then added a layer of white below and did the same thing again. Filled in some of the white with black, and voila?

straightened horizon and cropped for OOB

My attempt..

straightened
made sky bluer
played with curves
dodge/burned
made sails brighter
changed hue of water
made gradient radial from the skipper outwards, white to black to focus attention there by making him brighter
blurred the background a bit using the reduce noise filter
masked that and brushed back in the boat
sharpened, and masked to only sharpen the sails halfway and the people all the way
added vignette and border

leveled the horizon
fixed a hole in the front sail
'300' color look (sort of)
added contrast to the water (levels adjustment layer)
brightened the sails a bit (levels adjustment layer)
brought the sailors and front of the boat out of the shadows, not too much though (shadows/highlights)
added birds and clouds, dropped opacity to match the rest of the image
photo filter on the sail to match the new sky
border

Straightened and cropped.
Went to B&W then adjusted brightness and contrast, curves and levels, and then added a little noise to create advertising effect.
Added Rolex logo and slogan to border.
Did this because the image really reminded me of those rolex commercials. And when I added the noise to it it really did. Anyways, here is my out of the box submission:

Lovely work everyone!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For mine I changed the colors of the sky and water and added a frame.
- highlighted the sky
- created a new adjustment layer (hue & saturation) to make it bluer
- for the water I did the same thing to make it have the green tone
- each adjustment layer was blurred slightly to get rid of the harsh lines.
Sorry guys it took a little longer than I hoped...had a power cut for last 4 hours (sigh)
First of all, I must say I had a good laugh at seeing how many of you "fixed" the highly-effective wind indicator peephole in the sails! :D Anyway, now is the hard part... everyone did so great and there's such a wide range of approaches that it is really hard to choose!
Suzyb - first thing I thought when I saw your was "this is gonna be hard to beat...". Personally I think you did a perfect edit! I can't find any fault with it...
Justin and Ilmk - Love the borders! Justin's looks like it could belong to a teen sailing magazine :-)
Alexajlex, ShannyD and Slappy Sam- Contrast maybe a bit high in the first two, but I still liked it, nice smoothing Sam
Bittersweet - Yours had me laughing out loud!! (in context with the other photos of course, looked like the boat suddenly being chased back by a school of crazed fresh-water dolpins :-D) Good edit!
Azsteve-o - Liked yours a lot too, looks like a holiday brochure shot, very glamorous and romantic ;-) ;-)
Ocron - Great job creating such an ideal sailing fantasy!
Shadiow - Keep coming back to yours, It looks so cool!! Very original
Ok so here goes....
1- Ocron, edited every part of the pic and so well
2 - Suzy, I'll put that right on my wall
3 - Shadiow, Rolex eat your heart out!
You're up Ocron!
Congrats Ocron!! I really liked your bg you did and the birds gave it a nice touch.
Suzyb- I loved how you made it longer and have to admit I tried to do that to but couldn't figure it out lol.
SQuiP- I'm glad you had a good laugh with my edit. Of course that wasn't my intention but after you said that I couldn't help but look back and it and go wow he's right and started laughing.
Can't wait until the next one.
Wow, thanks! There were some great edits in there, Suzyb definitely set the bar high early, that was a very clean edit.
Look for #48 some time this afternoon.
Congrats Ocron!
This was definitely one of the best B & A's so far! Every time a new edit was posted, I just had to say, "oh, wow!"
Great job, everybody!
Slappy Sam, your edit looks exactly like something I'd do. I love the darkened/blurred vision.
