Hi,
Awsome some badminton shots. Iv'e been wanting to shoot badminton for a while, will get around to it eventually.
Looks like this was at a tournament what level??

Im guessing you used your 40d and 24-70L.

Your shots also look a little soft try using AI servo and continuos shooting, then track the player and fire of a few frames, time it to capture the action as the player goes to strike the shuttle. You could also use your monopod to help keep it steady. I would also use f2.8 or what ever gets the whole player sharp, just to blurr the distracting back grounds a bit.
I would also use tighter cropps to emphasise the player and action.

The first two shots I would aim at timing the shot as the player reaches his highest point just as he is about to strike the shuttle, would be nice if you could get the shuttle coming of the strings, this is a jump smash right? it would be good to capture the shuttles trajectory and sense of speed.

I like the angle of the player playing a backhand net shot, would be great if the shuttle was coming off the strings.

A good way to practice would be to shoot someone while they are training, a friend perhaps. This way you could set yourself up in different positions while they continuoslly play the same shot. That way you could see what angles and what settings would work best during a real match.

Anyway would love to see more, keep em coming.

yeah, this is a super fast sport...when you play competitively. Shooting badminton with mono doesn't work too well, because it just move all the time....not just left and right, there is ups and down too.

oh, and this is just from my old high school. It is just a normal school matchs, um...about what level they are in...I guess the most is low "C".

about those photos, they are fresh out of my CF card...haven't done anything to them yet but resize it to post online. getting them sharp is really hard, might just have to increase the shutter a bit more, although, I did want to keep some hand movement in the pictures. I don't know, just want to keep them looking fast....wahaha

I did some training pictures before, but all they do is just try to post...in game shoot helps a lot.

tamko, good first effort.

my suggestion is try to shoot tighter. there are too much space around the player. and due to the nature of the badminton gym, there can be many distracting elements around. so better to zoom in as close as you can.

if I shoot tighter, how can I make the image sharper?? the high school match one, I used 1000 iso, 2.8 /f, and 160s. should I push the shutter a little higher, although I do want to keep the some movement in the image.

from the coverage, it looks like it was a 50mm you used for most of the highschool shots? try going to 85mm if you have that focal length available. i am not sure how sharpness come into play here. when you zoom closer, you will need higher shutter speed as all the motion blur will show up.

also, a lot depends on what your lens can do. f/2.8 is very much borderline in most gym. UBC tends to be darker than others so f/2.8 is insufficient to get decent shutter speed there.. 50/1.4 is ok but it also means you need to sit right next to the sideline, which we do all the time. but shooting the baseline from the net area the coverage is too large for 50mm.

for badminton, try to aim for higher shutter speed, 1/320 is really the minimal, anything slow than that, you will be limited to taking photos of the serve... try push the ISO higher. don't worry about noise, a motion blurry image is worse than a little bit of noise. i regularly shoot at ISO3200. when most ppl are looking at photos online, you will likely be converting to 640x480 anyway, noise will not be an issue there.

C&C: Way too loose, and excessive motion blur.

yeah, i know... will do better next time, thanks. I probably will do some more shooting at the practice today, hope that it will turn out better.

Crop tighter.

In those gyms, consider prime lenses for certain types of shots. I find it easier to concentrate to get certain shots using the prime rather than zooming all over the place trying to track the player.

Go to ISO1600 and shutter of 1/320 minimum.

Difficult problem with the backgrounds are very distracting.
