Can anyone tell me how to change Photshop CS or set my new 20D camera for the following problem.
All the JPG images are opening at 72 dpi when I open them in Photoshop CS. I am using the (Large Fine) setting on my camera. When I open a raw image in Photoshop CS the images are 240 dpi. How can I get the JPG images to open at 240 dpi instaed of 72 dpi.
thanks Emil

Unfortunately, that's just how the camera (and most camera's for that matter) records jpegs. It's not a problem, it's just a reference for display, so you can change it in PS in the image size window easily. The reason your RAW files come in at 240 is because that is the default for the program used to decode the RAW for PS (both the adobe camera raw 2.3, and the photo pro that comes with the camera). If it's a big problem you can write a action for it, so you can run it in batches.
Hope that answers your question, and if anyone knows better than I, please feel free, I've only had the camera for about 24 hours.

As for the default setting of 240 dpi, that is not set in cement. You can change it to any number you're desire when you open up in "raw." I set mine for 325 dpi only because I want to my prints at a higher resolution, even though my dye sub printer (Kodak 8500) is only rated at 314 res. I don't know how to change the 72 dpi rating for the jpeg; apparenlty that is the number that is commonly used for web pages. But the jpeg setting does not bother me because I have no use for it. The reason I don't use jpeg is because the quality of the image degrades every time you make changes. If it want to email a file, I merely go to "image size" in photoshop and set my dpi to 90, and also reset the dimension size. Then I "save for the web." The result can be used for either the Web or for emails. Hope I have been of some help.

You can change it to anything you wish in JPG, too. But you'll be better off changing it to something sensible when you print.
The DPI setting is (almost) only used when you print. It will tell the printer how many pixels/dots to print per inch. If you only view the images on your computer screen then the DPI is meaningless. And if you send images out to get professionally printed then the DPI will also - most likely - be useless as the printer will override your setting.

Yes, my 20D defaults to 72 dpi with no way of changing it in the camera but my 300D defaults to 180 dpi - why the difference?

Not true. It doesn't degrade when changes are made. Only when you save the picture as a jpeg does it degrade. The file can be modified/worked on without degradation. To avoid degradation, simply save as tiff.

Like mentioned above, it's a BS number when coming from a capture device (camera, scanner). You will also find that different software will give different results when a JPEG has no dpi assigned. Again it's just a default value you're seeing.

Well know it all, if you read what I said, I was obviously referring to JPEG'S and not Tiffs. Only an idiot would make changes and not save it; unless it's some clown with nothing else to do.

Scottes:
You must have been a real pain in the ass as a kid. Bet you were the teacher's pet and a real apple-polishing ass-licker. Why don't you give it a rest, or does you gigantic ego compel you to try to "correct" every post you see, whether it is a correction or not. You come off as a pompous, would be know-it-all. brown-noser. You state you have a life and a picture to prove it; well that picture looks like a real irritating brat, and the only thing it proves to me is that you never grew up from the brat you were.

You ask for help, you get help, then you throw insults at the person who helped you... I don't even know what to say, except change your attitude before you log in again!

Wrong! I never asked for any help. But you're bound to make mistakes when you stick your nose in something without the slightest idea of what you're talking about.

Yeah and with that attitude I doubt that you will be getting much help from anyone around here anytime soon.

Hey, I took that course a couple of years ago and it's done me wonders....I think.
You can ask IanD, Scottes or ssims. They can testify to the fact that dogs, cats and parrots like me a lot more now. :D :)

The elk, however, are waiting for you to take the course again since you slept through the section on "Elk And Other Ungulates"

Oh, please don't mention the Kangaroos. I think they're stalking me. They always seem to pop up when I least expect them.
And as for the elks, Scottes, they're much too slobbery for my taste. I wouldn't want to be within 10 feet of them and their slobber!
