I have had this lens since I got the Digital Rebel when it first came out. While I have been extremely happy with the quality of the lens it did seem to be soft on my D Rebel, D30 and D60. Using this lens with the 20D is a whole new ballgame. The photos are very crisp right from the camera. In the photo below I used only in camera sharpening. I did shoot it at f2.8, ISO 100, 1/450...Dean

I'm very happy with mine and it has become my portrait lens. This was taken at 5.6, I believe, not wide open.

very nice...how does it look at f8?
like with my 50mm f8 is crap compared to under f4...but the 17-40 L is sharp as hell closed a little

It looks great at f8. When I was using it on my Rebel, D30 and 60, it was a little soft wide open but at 5.6 and up it was razor sharp. Now I know that it had something to do with the cameras as I am not using USM that much anymore. It was required with all photos before...Dean

Malaxos1 that's a fantastic picture, and a testament to just how good that darned lens is! Now I need my back to heal so I can go shoot with mine!!!
Do you mind telling us what you used for lighting? Reflectors, on camera flash? remote flash?
Looks great!

I used my 420 ex flash on a Strobframe. It is the way I meter that gets these results. I use partial meter in full manual mode. I scan the scene and meter off the brightest part of the scene. I then adjust it until the exposure is in the middle as if I were metering off middle gray. I dunno why it works as it seems to go against all I know, but it does...Dean

Very nice, hoping my Tamron will be that great with the 20D.
It has been good with the 10D, let's hope it gets even better :P

I have been watching the threads posted on this lens. I was considering buying the Cannon EF 50mm f1.4. But reading some of the comments and seeing some of the pictures posted, I am seriously considering the Tamron 28-75 XR Di lens instead. Is the lens durable? Is the lens barrel and plastic or metal? How would you rate the auto focus?

The lens is very durable. Very nice weight and it has a nice long warranty, so no worries!
Autofocus isn't quite as fast as the L lens, but it's really very fast. I have NEVER had a problem with the focus speed, it's always been much faster than anything I need it for!

Thanks Andy, I think I am going to get this lens instead of the Canon 50mm f/1.4. I am a little leary about buying lens. My Canon 70-200 F/2.8 IS was defective right out of the box.

This lens is a very good alternative option to the expensive, yet good 20D usm kit lens. I already have the 50 1.8mm and just waiting a few weeks (need to replace money in my bank account) and then will purchase this Tamron lens.
I spent all morning searching this board about this lens and the 28 - 300 .. thank god I found out the truth about the 28 - 300 .. Ever since my 35mm, I have been leary about using a lens with such a wide field.

I'll add my example of Tamron 28-75 wide open.
10D, 1/100s, f/2.8, ISO 100, 66mm, contrast enhanced and a bit of USM:
