I just purchased a new NEC Dual Layer DVD internal drive for archiving my photos. I currently have a CD-ROM and CD-RW drive in my Win XP PC. I want to take out the CD-RW drive, and install the DVD drive into that bay. Is this just a matter of switching cables onto the new drive, and installing the drivers? I'm assuming I should match the jumper setting on the new drive with the old, correct? Anything else I need to be aware of? DVD burner virgin here. Thanks.

I took out my CD when I did this, so now I have two burners. If you're going to put the CD burner in another system that's cool, or if the CD reader is faster reading thean the burner that's OK. Otherwise it might be handy to have 2 burners.
But check the jumpers on the back of the drives next to where the IDE cable comes in. You should see something like "MA CS SL" which is Master, Cable Select, Slave. Check which one is used on the drive you're removing and set the new drive to the same setting. Make sure that you're keeping the same position on the IDE cable, too. That's about it.

Great, thanks for your advice. Can't wait to start burning to DVD format.

Note that not all burning software supports the dual layer format!
